The nopal, or prickly pear cactus (Opuntia species), is a resilient and versatile plant native to the Americas, especially Mexico and the southwestern United States. It is known for its flat, paddle-like pads (called nopales) and vibrant fruit (called tunas).

Nopales are edible when harvested young; they have a slightly tangy, green bean-like flavor and a mucilaginous texture. Used in Mexican cuisine in salads, tacos, and stews. Tunas sweet and juicy, with colors ranging from green to red and purple. Commonly eaten fresh, juiced, or made into jams.

Rich in fiber, antioxidants, and vitamins (especially C and B-complex). Helps regulate blood sugar levels.
Traditionally used for digestive health, inflammation, and even as a natural hangover remedy. Thrives in arid environments, making it valuable for sustainable agriculture.

Nopal is an essential part of Mexican culture, both as a food source and a national symbol, appearing on the country’s coat of arms.
