I live in the Dallas, Texas area and you can get them from just about any pet store. Right now you would have to get the to order it but there are several locations that have them in stock all the time. And infact the largest breeder in the world in Axolotl Planet in Dallas!
Any reason for their popularity?
Some Bojack Horseman effect!? lol
Well, Minecraft introduced them to the game this last year. I think that made them more popular. Other than that, they are easy to take care of, and look really cool.
