This is the foundation of my love for Italy. Ten minutes after the initial shock that I missed the train at the age of 15 and ended up in Venice instead of Belgrade, I had a train ticket in my pocket and very precise instructions on which platform the train will be on in about 15 hours.

The Italian conductor in a James Bond suit was very helpful. At parting he handed me a freshly bought map of Venice with a few rounded locations with a couple of wisdoms at the end:

• ‘If you think you need one hour to come back to the station - you need at least two!’
• ‘You’ll get lost! Don't worry! Everyone gets lost! ’

I can tell you that this smiling guy did me one of the greatest favors ever. If I hadn't, at his urging, left the station and lost in Venice for the next 15 hours, who knows if I would ever have become such a wanderer in the years that followed. Many times I thanked him while at some new location.
