Venice consists of 118 islands connected by 417 bridges. Of these, 72 bridges are privately owned. The canal network consists of as many as 177 ‘streets’ on the water. The largest S-shaped canal that roughly divides Venice into two parts is called the Grand Canal. If you go to Google street view in Venice, you will walk through canals and not passages along buildings, because canals are Venetian streets.
