Panorama 😃
Daily Photography #742
These two photos of the same location on Mount Jadovnik are great to explain the difference between different projections when a panorama of multiple shots is generated. This technology of making wide-angle photos in post-production is common when the scene is very wide and a suitable lens is not available.
The first photo was taken using the perspective projection. This projection project photo on flat surface and it preserve all straight lines from the real world. It is most often used for architecture, but in this case the long wooden fence is perfect for the application of this projection. This makes the fence look natural, but the resulting photo is blurry in the corners.
The second photo was created using a cylindrical projection, which projects the scene onto a cylindrical plane around the camera. Due to that, the horizontal lines are curved, while the vertical ones, such as trees and fence posts, remain natural shape and stay straight. This projection is most often used for landscape photography.
There is also a third projection - a spherical projection. In this projection, the photo is projected onto an imaginary sphere around the camera. It is used in landscape photography when it is not important to preserve vertical lines. Also, this projection is used in so-called POV 3D photos when simulating a first-person view.
