The famous Galle fort was built by Portuguese few centuries ago after our costal areas were captured by them. The reason to create this massive fort was the fear in them on attacks by Sinhalese king. So they built this with very high walls which provides great protection. Today around 3/4 of the fort walls are facing the sea and other side is facing the ground. But according to the records it was fully covered by sea at that time.
