Is being Introvert a setback in life?

in personality •  2 years ago

People have different types of behaviors. There are extroverts and there are introverts. People who are extroverts one can always make out, they are loud, they make their presence felt everywhere around. They want to be seen and heard all the time. They always have things to say. Whereas an introvert person is not exactly shying off, but prefers to be in boundaries. Does not feel a need to be seen or heard.

In the corporate we see that extroverts always stand out, they take the center stage wherever they are, but does that mean that they are always successful and they can become good leaders. Well, for someone to be a good leader it is important that the person is always approachable and the person can lead by example. But that by no means will say that an introvert person cannot become a good leader. This topic came up in one of our last week management meetings, where we were planning to do some promotions, and along with their work competencies their behavioral traits were also being considered.

One of the management members was in the view that an introvert person cannot become an effective leader, for the very reason that this person will not be easily approachable. For me I believe that just because the person does not talk much and stays in the boundaries does not evaluate if he will be capable of a leadership position or not. Rather I feel that they can become very good leaders, because they have patience to listen, they always do not have a need to speak and put themselves in front all the time. Because of their calm temperament they will also be better decision makers.

In my career journey, I have worked with many senior leadership positions and observed their behavior's closely since I have been into soft skill trainings. At large I have always seen that extrovert people have been at leadership position, but not all of them have been very effective. Whereas on the other hand I have also come across a few introverts on senior positions and I have found them very effective in their positions.

So being an introvert or an extrovert in no way defines if one can lead or not lead. There are many other factors to consider. In jobs like Sales and Marketing extrovert people are required because here one needs to talk and sell in their best capacity. I feel that introverts have more depth in their capacity and when they talk, they only talk sense.

Great article. Do consider this: extrovert behaviour is a leadership required trait. Therefor people lacking it needs to makeup in being very good at other things.

Im not saying its a fact, but it is an assumption woth considering.

A leader does need to stand out and be visible that's true, but sometimes actions speak more then words so it's all about how they carry themselves between people.
