In times of uncertainty, strife, or bereavement, how can we find hope? People's words and deeds might inspire us when we feel like we have given up. Hope manifests itself in a variety of ways in these poems: as an unobstructed path, a page that hasn't been turned, a passage to an other realm, an ark, a baby, or a glove that has been lost and found again.
Given the difficulty of defining hope, it seems reasonable to use metaphors to express it. More subtle, enigmatic, and cryptic than mere optimism, it is deeper still. Although it is a state we are endowed with, it is also an emotion we must work to nurture, much like faith.
When we work every day to better and change the things we can control, hope can encourage grit, or the willpower to persevere in the face of failures and setbacks.
