Metaplex announced that creators can upgrade their existing NFT collections to Programmable NFTs (pNFTs) with royalties enforcement on Solana.
Royalties enforcement can be programmed into NFTs via rule sets
Creators can choose between 3 upgrade options:
1. Maximize compatibility with ecosystem programs
2. Enable stricter royalties enforcement (based on an allow-list)
3. Create their own allow or deny list
Metaplex is providing a “compatibility rule set” that doesn’t impose any transfer restrictions to ease the transition into pNFTs across the ecosystem, as well as a Metaplex Foundation royalties rule set that only includes programs that honor royalties (or are exempt, e.g. staking)
Programs fully compatible with pNFTs:
Royalties enforcement comes with trade-offs. Creators should weigh the pros & cons carefully before upgrading (it can’t be reversed)
Risks include pending integrations across the ecosystem and how holders may react to the restrictions of the new asset class for example
If collectors use utility tools (staking, lending, etc.),it is required to make sure to check their compatibility with pNFTs in Metaplex integration table. Tools that haven’t yet integrated may not be able to display or transfer pNFTs until they upgrade their systems
