Beethoven (original sketch, based on the Bust of Beethoven by Hugo Hagen, 1892, US Library of Congress)
The full quote reads as such:
"The true artist is not proud: he unfortunately sees that art has no limits; he feels darkly how far he is from the goal, and though he may be admired by others, he is sad not to have reached that point to which his better genius only appears as a distant, guiding sun."

This is a sketch I drew for a friend as part of a "letters, stickers, art, historical magazine clippings, old photograph prints, Polaroids, baseball cards" send, as mentioned in this post: LINK.
Aside from his music and personality, Beethoven has interested me for some time due to the theories and teachings of the great film editor Walter Murch, as mentioned in this post: LINK.
The quote added to the drawing is interesting to me since Beethoven is known to at times have come across as quite proud indeed, especially in comparison to others.
But in this quote he is not shrugging off pride whilst standing in front of some other artist or man. He is standing in front of art itself. And there he is humble.
