My Music Reviews: Rhapsody, pioneer of epic metal and their masterpiece: Symphony of Enchanted Lands.

I inaugurate with this post a series of reviews dedicated to the world of music. And I do it with one of my favorite bands in the so-called Heavy Metal or perhaps better Epic Metal, a musical genre that the members of Rhapsody have developed better than anyone.

I remember that they were my favorites during my long stay in Europe. Despite being Italian (Trieste to be more exact) they have developed their career and recorded their albums outside of Italy, especially in Germany where they are widely recognized and have a large number of fans.

Today I am going to refer to their most famous song, at this point a true collector's item: Symphony of Enchanted Lands.

It is time for big changes for Trieste's Rhapsody of Fire: the new French bassist Pratice Guers has been hired to replace the deserter Alessandro Lotta. Then, the new contract with the important Magic Circle Music Records (read " Manowar ") which gave the band a big budget, thus allowing it to have an orchestra of 130 elements plus 40 backing singers; but the thing does not end there, none other than the actor Christopher Lee is hired as narrator of the album.

With this album, “Dark Secret Saga” is inaugurated and for the occasion the band decides to return to the initial sounds, that is, a wide space for the orchestral and instrumental parts so that everything is as majestic as possible (although at times it sounds too grandiloquent and full of energy).

The beginning is in the hands of Christopher Lee’s warm narrative voice and the apocalyptic choruses of “Ira Divina” that create a brilliant pathos.

“Unholy Warcry” is the piece that makes clear how all the songs on the album will be structured: the guitar at full speed over a chord, the drummer Alex abusing the double bass making the drums become a helicopter, in short all the clichés of Halloween power metal. But these things take a backseat thanks to the excellent orchestral parts that combine perfectly with the heavier sounds.

In addition, after years, Luca Turilli finally manages to try his luck with a proper solo, without resorting to 'sweep picks' or uninteresting tricks. Keyboardist Alessandro Staropoli has also evolved his technique: all the riffs are more mature and better thought out, so no more keyboard solos reminiscent of 80s video games.

The most exciting song is undoubtedly "Sacred Power of the Furious Winds", on which a certain Claudio Simonetti (former member of Goblin, creators of the soundtrack for many Dario Argento films) collaborated. Fabio Lione acts as a matador throughout the piece, singing masterfully, essentially interpreting the characters of the story. But the phenomenal part is the finale where the theme of the film Profondo Rosso is quoted, revisiting it in a symphonic key, also famous is the kind of challenge in the last note between Luca and the violinist.

The band certainly hasn't forgotten their Italian origins, and here is a song entirely in their mother tongue, it's “Guardiani del Destino”, where Fabio sings it in a 'branduardesque' style.

The most aggressive is “Sombras de Muerte”, very varied in which the orchestral part doesn't interfere with the guitars; Luca does it better creating solos that recall classical works such as those of Paganelli.

There is room for the passionate “La magia del sueño del mago”, in which Fabio does a duet with Lee. Sweet and intense song that if it had entered some local charts would have been in the top places for a long time.

This is a great album from Rhapsody of Fire, in which the band has the opportunity to show their symphonic metal in the best possible way. And laughing and joking, this album has sold something like a million copies worldwide, find me another Italian band that has done better.

Rhapsody of Fire's musical genre is also mistakenly defined as epic metal because it is based on a real historical genre invented by themselves, and tells the story of the deeds of those who compose it (but musically it is distant from what is proposed by real epic metal bands, such as Manilla Road and Manowar). Obviously all this goes hand in hand with the dominant fantasy theme. Rhapsody's sound is more linked to the sounds of power metal than to those of epic, which focuses on more properly heavy sounds.

In summary, Rhapsody of Fire's music is strongly influenced by baroque classical music, folk, power metal, neoclassical metal, epic metal, but the central basis of their music is mainly inspired by the soundtracks of Hollywood films such as Conan the Barbarian and The Lord of the Rings, and by fantasy themes. For this reason, their music cannot be labeled in a single, well-defined and precise genre.

Among the major influences they cite Manowar, Yngwie Malmsteen, Blind Guardian, Crimson Glory, Helloween from the Keeper of the Seven Keys period and Riot from Thunderstee.

Inauguro con este post una serie de reseñas dedicadas al mundo de la música. Y lo hago con una de mis bandas preferidas en el llamado Heavy Metal o tal vez mejor Epic Metal, un género musical que los integrantes de Rhapsody han desarrollado mejor qie ninguno.

Recuerdo que eran mis preferidos durante mi larga estadía en Europa. A pesar de ser italianos (triestinos para ser más exactos) hn desarrollado su carrera y grabado sus discos fuera de Italia, especialmente en Alemania donde son ampliamente reconodiso y cuentan con una gran cantidad de fans.

Hoy me moy a referir a su canción más conocodia, a estas alturas una verdadera obra de colección: Symphony of Enchanted Lands (Sinfonía de las Tierras Encantadas)

Es hora de grandes cambios para Rhapsody of Fire de Trieste: el nuevo bajista francés Pratice Guers ha sido contratado para reemplazar al desertor Alessandro Lotta. El comienzo está en manos de la cálida voz narrativa de Christopher Lee y los estribillos apocalípticos de " Ira Divina " que crean un patetismo brillante.

“ Unholy Warcry ” es la pieza que deja claro cómo se estructurarán todas las canciones del disco: la guitarra a toda velocidad sobre un acorde, el baterista Alex que abusa del contrabajo haciendo que la batería se convierta en un helicóptero, en definitiva todos los cliché del power metal de Halloween. Pero estas cosas pasan a un segundo plano gracias a las excelentes partes orquestales que combinan a la perfección con los sonidos más pesados.

Además, después de años, Luca Turilli finalmente logra probar suerte con un solo adecuado, sin recurrir a ' sweep picks ' ni a trucos de poco interés. El teclista Alessandro Staropoli también ha evolucionado su técnica: todos los riffs son más maduros y mejor pensados, por lo que no más solos de teclado que recuerdan a los videojuegos de los 80.

La canción más emocionante es sin duda " Sagrado poder de los vientos furiosos ", en la que colaboró ​​​​un tal Claudio Simonetti (ex miembro de Goblin , creadores de la banda sonora de muchas películas de Dario Argento) . Fabio Lione actúa como matador durante toda la pieza, cantando magistralmente, interpretando de forma esencial a los personajes de la historia. La más agresiva es “ Sombras de Muerte ”, muy variada en la que la parte orquestal no interfiere con las guitarras; Luca lo hace mejor creando solos que recuerdan obras clásicas como las de Paganelli.

Hay espacio para la apasionante “ La magia del sueño del mago ”, en la que Fabio hace un dueto con Lee. Dulce e intensa canción que si hubiera entrado en algunas listas locales hubiera estado en los primeros lugares por mucho tiempo.

Este es un gran álbum de Rhapsody of Fire, en el que la banda tiene la oportunidad de mostrar su metal sinfónico de la mejor manera posible. Y riendo y bromeando, este álbum ha vendido algo así como un millón de copias en todo el mundo, búsquenme otra banda italiana a la que le haya ido mejor.

El género musical de Rhapsody of Fire también se define erróneamente como metal épico ya que se basa en una corriente histórica real inventada por ellos mismos, y narra las gestas de quienes lo componen (pero musicalmente dista de lo propuesto por bandas de metal épico reales). , como Manilla Road y Manowar). Evidentemente todo esto encaja con el tema fantástico dominante. El sonido de Rhapsody está más ligado a los sonidos del power metal que a los del epic, que se centra en sonidos más propiamente heavys.

En resumen, la música de Rhapsody of Fire está fuertemente influenciada por la música clásica barroca, folk, power metal, metal neoclásico, metal épico, pero la base central de su música está inspirada principalmente en las bandas sonoras de películas de Hollywood como Conan el bárbaro y The Lord. de los Anillos, y con temática fantástica. Por este motivo su música no puede etiquetarse en un género único, bien definido y preciso.
