The marriage will not last long and will force her to leave the city in search of fortune.
After going to a restaurant to ask for a job, the young woman trusts a man she met at the club, Billy Canton, and decides to work for him at a lap dance club.
But one night, the harassment of the man who had become her protector led to a fight, in which a client of the club intervened to defend her, Sergeant Mike Medwicki, a recently divorced soldier and father of two children, who, after teaching Billy a lesson, offers him accommodation in his house.
The woman accepts and moves in with him for a while. Mandy falls in love with him, but one day his superiors call him again for living with a minor, forcing him to leave her. Mandy, enraged, returns to her former pimp Billy and one night, after getting high with the latter, decides to take revenge and together they go to kill Mike. After the murder, the two flee to Mandy's hometown, where they find temporary shelter with a couple of neighbors, but are recognized and arrested. Billy claims that Mandy forced him to do what she said, so Mandy is imprisoned and charged with voluntary manslaughter. Mandy's lawyer, Buddy Thornton, takes the case seriously and tries every means to defend her from the death penalty, but failing, the court will sentence Mandy to the gas chamber.

Although set in Oklahoma, the film is loosely based on Attina Marie Cannaday, who along with David Gray killed Ronald Wojcik with a knife, in Harrison County, Mississippi, on June 3, 1982.
Cannaday (born September 8, 1965) was charged with robbery, kidnapping, and murder. At the time of the trial, she was a sixteen-year-old divorcee, who had been married at thirteen and divorced at fourteen. She was convicted in Harrison County Circuit Court of the kidnapping and murder of Americans. Air Force Staff Sergeant Ronald Wojcik and the jury sentenced her to death by lethal injection. The guilty verdict was affirmed, but the conviction was overturned in 1984, Cannaday v. State, 455 So.2d 713, 720 (Miss. 1984), and she was resentenced to one life term and two 25-year terms at the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility (inmate number 42451). She was paroled on March 9, 2008.
Her co-defendant, David Randolph Gray (born May 29, 1954), was charged with aggravated assault, grand larceny, and murder. He too was sentenced to death by lethal injection. His conviction was overturned in May 1987 by the United States Supreme Court, in Gray v. Mississippi, 481 U.S. 648, on the grounds that "a qualified jury was excluded from his trial." He is currently serving a life sentence at the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility (inmate number 01440).
