In this visually stunning film, a disillusioned World War II veteran (Keanu Reeves) takes a surprising turn when he pretends to be the husband of a vineyard owner's domineering daughter.
A soldier returns from World War II. His wife disappoints him (they split up immediately) and he, in search of himself, meets a pregnant girl who doesn't have the courage to face her family. He agrees to pose as her husband. The deception doesn't last long. The truth comes out, but in the meantime the two love each other. Despite its heavy melodrama, it's a beautiful story (inspired by Blasetti's Quattro passi fra le nuvole). The farm scenes, lush vineyards and country celebrations are really good.
En esta película visualmente impactante, un veterano desilusionado de la Segunda Guerra Mundial (Keanu Reeves) da un giro sorprendente cuando finge ser el marido de la hija dominante de un dueño de viñedos.
Un soldado regresa de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Su mujer lo decepciona (se separan inmediatamente) y él, en busca de sí mismo, conoce a una chica embarazada que no tiene el coraje de enfrentarse a su familia. Él acepta hacerse pasar por su marido. Paul Sutton returns from war, confident of starting a new life with the wife he met and hurriedly married the day before he shipped out. The young woman, who attends the city university, is expecting an illegitimate child from her professor who abandoned her and fears the reaction of her father, Alberto. After a series of setbacks, Paul decides to accompany her home and pretend to be her husband, with the agreement that the role will only last a short time, as it is decided that he will leave the next day, leaving a farewell letter.
Paul immediately encounters the open hostility of Alberto - an old-fashioned, authoritarian man, jealous of his daughter, irritated because they have not done things according to rules and tradition - along with the affability of his mother Maria Jose, his younger brother Pedro and above all his grandfather, Don Pedro. Immersed in the warm family atmosphere, Paul, an orphan, is won over by him and also for this reason he delays his departure. The ritual of the grape harvest, with the bacchic and sunny climate of the grape pressing, almost drives Paul crazy, but he decides to resist the temptation to seduce Victoria, although he is attracted to her and she reciprocates his feelings.
Paul finds in the young woman's family a refuge from the horrors of war that still traumatize him. The fact that they do not sleep together arouses suspicion in Alberto who, impressed by the displays of affection of the false son-in-law towards his daughter, decides to marry them in a religious rite. At this point, Victoria is forced to confess the truth to her father, while Paul reluctantly leaves to return to his wife.
Meanwhile, the woman has read all of Paul's letters and has realized that she and her husband are too different; she is also in a relationship with another man. She suggests to Paul that their marriage be annulled. Free, the young man immediately returns to the vineyard, but finds Alberto drunk, who lunges at him and, brandishing a kerosene lamp to hit him, accidentally throws it into the vineyard, setting it on fire. Attempts to put out the flames were in vain.
Only the mother plant of the vineyard is saved from the fire and Paul suggests that it will be precisely that plant that will revive the crops. Alberto makes peace with his daughter and Paul can marry her, agreeing to be a good father to the unborn child.

El ritual de la vendimia, con el clima báquico y soleado del prensado de la uva, casi hace perder la cabeza a Paul, pero decide resistir la tentación de seducir a Victoria, aunque se siente atraído por ella y ella le corresponde.
Paul encuentra en la familia de la joven un refugio de los horrores de la guerra que todavía lo traumatizan. A remake of Quattro passi fra le nuvole, an Italian film from the 1940s by Alessandro Blasetti (same title in the original language), Il profumo del mosto selvaggio follows the same plot but not the style. The essential and realistic film with Gino Cervi becomes a romantic comedy of errors.
The setting changes from rural Italy to the charming vineyard of a Mexican family, and this is one of the elements of the film's charm. The richness of traditions, the deep sense of family unity, passed down from generation to generation, and respect for the wisdom of the elders, are the insistent themes surrounding the love story.
The script plays a lot with the contrast between gringos and Mexicans, modernity and tradition, city and countryside, highlighting the importance of the link with the land and the relationship of each man with his roots, roots that are not only his past but also the most solid base for his future.
It is almost inevitable, therefore, that the idealistic orphan Paul continues to feel irresistibly drawn not only to young Victoria, but also to her world and the warmth of her home. More successful on the brilliant level (grandfather Anthony Quinn, the consequences of the initial lie) than on the dramatic level (the veteran's conventional war nightmares), the film works best when it flies lightly into comedy and romance.
Consider the scene where the grandfather gets drunk with his false son-in-law to the tune of a Mexican song and the royal serenade (A Walk in the Clouds, by the same director). On the contrary, the worst moment is precisely the most tragic, that is, the disastrous fire in the vineyard, which borders on the ridiculous (the plants seem to have been doused with gasoline!).
Taken as a fairy tale, the film can be enjoyable, thanks also to a lively and multi-ethnic cast, in which our own Giancarlo Giannini stands out in the role of the Mexican. Keanu Reeves is confirmed as an actor with little talent but with the angelic face that the role requires, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón is better and equally in character. Beautiful photography.
Un remake de Quattro passi fra le nuvole, una película italiana de los años 40 de Alessandro Blasetti (mismo título en el idioma original), Il profumo del mosto selvaggio sigue la misma trama pero no el estilo. La película esencial y realista con Gino Cervi se convierte en una comedia romántica de errores.
El escenario cambia de la Italia rural al encantador viñedo de una familia mexicana, y éste es uno de los elementos del encanto de la película. La riqueza de las tradiciones, el profundo sentido de unidad familiar, transmitido de generación en generación y el respeto a la sabiduría de los mayores, son los temas insistentes que rodean la historia de amor.
El guión juega mucho con el contraste entre gringos y mexicanos, modernidad y tradición, ciudad y campo, resaltando la importancia del vínculo con la tierra y la relación de cada hombre con sus raíces, raíces que no sólo son su pasado sino también la base más sólida para su futuro.
Es casi inevitable, por tanto, que el huérfano idealista Paul siga sintiéndose irrestiblemente atraído no sólo por la joven Victoria, sino también por su mundo y la calidez de su hogar. Con más éxito en el nivel brillante (el abuelo Anthony Quinn, las consecuencias de la mentira inicial) que en el dramático (las convencionales pesadillas de guerra del veterano), la película funciona mejor cuando vuela ligeramente en la comedia y el romance.
Pensemos en la escena en la que el abuelo se emborracha con su falso yerno al son de una canción mexicana y la serenata real (Un paseo por las nubes, del mismo director). Al contrario, el peor momento es precisamente el más trágico, es decir, el desastroso incendio en el viñedo, que raya en lo ridículo (¡las plantas parecen rociadas con gasolina!).
Tomada como un cuento de hadas, la película puede resultar agradable, gracias también a un reparto vivaz y multiétnico, en el que destaca nuestro propio Giancarlo Giannini en el papel de mexicano. Keanu Reeves se confirma como un actor de poco talento pero con el rostro angelical que requiere el papel, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón está mejor e igualmente en el personaje. Hermosa fotografía.
