Calvary is a 2014 film directed by John Michael McDonagh and starring Brendan Gleeson. It was released in Irish cinemas on 11 April 2014.
In the majority column are Brendan Gleeson's performance, which manages to maintain restraint and dignity even within this grandiose plot (and we're talking about ethical, rather than physical, killing), and Larry Smith's cinematography.
Even the grotesque nature of the plot, made up of encounters-confessions in the manner of a via crucis with an obvious theatrical matrix, and the acid humour which, in some scenes, manages to get a laugh out of the audience, can be considered virtues.
John Michael Donagh made his feature debut with The Irishman (2011), a strange Irish buddy movie in which Brendan Gleeson plays a sullen and unorthodox Gaelic policeman and Don Cheadle plays an FBI agent who must collaborate with him in a drug trafficking case.
For his second film he has once again cast the Homeric Gleeson, though here in a different but equally taciturn role: a priest who aspires to a kind of universal brotherhood, at least in the small (but not at all endearing) town where he lives and practices, whose existence becomes progressively more sordid.
It is not difficult to categorise a film like Calvary according to genre orthodoxy. It is as much a comedy as it is a drama, and there are plenty of thriller or detective story details. There's violence and absurdity, pulses and distensions. And also touches of black humour.

Incluso el carácter esperpéntico de la trama, hecha de encuentros-confesiones a modo de vía crucis con una evidente matriz teatral, y el humor ácido que, en algunas escenas, consigue arrancar una carcajada pueden considerarse virtudes.

Para su segunda película ha vuelto a contar con el homérico Gleeson, aunque aquí en un cometido ciertamente distinto pero igual de taciturno: se trata de un sacerdote que aspira a una suerte de hermandad universal, al menos en la pequeña (pero nada entrañable) ciudad en la que vive y practica, cuya existencia se va haciendo más sórdida progresivamente.
No resulta difícil de catalogar un filme como Calvary si nos atenemos a la ortodoxia del género. Es tanto una comedia como un drama, y abundan los detalles de relato de intriga o policiaco. Hay violencia y absurdidad, pulsiones y distensiones. Y también toques de humor negro.
On an ordinary Sunday morning in a quiet seaside town in the west of Ireland, Father James Lavelle sits in his confessional listening to the sins of his parishioners. He is taken aback when a penitent announces that he intends to kill him to avenge the rape he suffered as a child at the hands of another, now deceased priest. The man gives Father James a week to put things right and make peace with the spiritual and personal conundrum he finds himself in.
Father James is a kind of contemporary Job, forced to listen to the sins of an Irish community that resembles a gallery of monsters: a man traumatised by a priest's constant violence towards him, a wealthy aristocrat who hates everything and everyone, a psychopathic serial rapist murderer, an unfaithful wife with a passion for felching, an acidic waiter, a police inspector with a promiscuous mistress, a sadistic doctor and even the parish priest's own daughter (conceived when Father James was still a married man) with suicidal tendencies. The prelate himself is a former alcoholic who lost his way after the death of his wife, only to find himself again thanks to Faith.
He will find it hard to cope with the bad blood and resentments that lurk around him, not least because most of the inhabitants of the parish are possessed by a black cynicism: the same cynicism that seems to animate Anglo-Irish director and screenwriter John Michael McDonagh, as he relentlessly crucifies his protagonist by surrounding him with bawdy, destructive and degenerate characters, present in the community in a way that is even statistically exaggerated. McDonagh seems to take particular umbrage with the Church, which is full of paedophiles, hypocrites and businessmen. Apart from Father James' assistant, who is simply "frighteningly stupid".
En una mañana de domingo cualquiera en una tranquila ciudad costera del oeste de Irlanda, el padre James Lavelle está sentado en su confesionario escuchando los pecados de sus feligreses. Se queda desconcertado cuando un penitente le anuncia que pretende matarle para vengar la violación que sufrió de niño a manos de otro sacerdote ya fallecido. El padre James es una especie de Job contemporáneo, obligado a escuchar los pecados de una comunidad irlandesa que se asemeja a una galería de monstruos: un hombre traumatizado por la violencia constante de un cura hacia él, un aristócrata adinerado que odia todo y a todos, un psicópata asesino violador en serie, una esposa infiel con pasión por el felching, un camarero ácido, un inspector de policía con una amante promiscua, un médico sádico e incluso la propia hija del párroco (concebida cuando el padre James aún era un hombre casado) con tendencias suicidas. El propio prelado es un antiguo alcohólico que perdió el rumbo tras la muerte de su esposa, sólo para reencontrarse a sí mismo gracias a Faith.
Le costará mucho aguantar la mala leche y los resentimientos que acechan a su alrededor, entre otras cosas porque la mayoría de los habitantes de la parroquia están poseídos por un cinismo negro: el mismo cinismo que parece animar al director y guionista angloirlandés John Michael McDonagh, ya que crucifica incesantemente a su protagonista rodeándolo de personajes chuscos, destructivos y degenerados, presentes en la comunidad de forma incluso estadísticamente exagerada. McDonagh parece ensañarse especialmente con la Iglesia, repleta de pedófilos, hipócritas y hombres de negocios. Aparte del ayudante del padre James, que es simplemente "espantosamente tonto".
