Weeds is an American television series in the black comedy genre set in a fictional suburb of California, where most of the residents are involved in the trafficking and consumption of cannabis (hence the title).
This and no other is perhaps the real reason why the distribution of the series in its country of origin was a huge success, but in the rest of the world, and especially in Europe, it was banned because of its content: the use, consumption and commercialisation of marijuana (cannabis).
Produced and broadcast in the United States by the Showtime channel from 2005 to 2012, the series was a great success with viewers.

Agrestic, California. After the sudden death of her husband Judah, Nancy Botwin (Mary-Louise Parker) decides to go into the marijuana trafficking business to maintain a comfortable standard of living and provide a good education for her two sons Silas (Hunter Parrish) and Shane (Alexander Gould). Nancy is surprised by the heavy consumption of pot in the affluent residential area where she lives with her family, which also includes her brother-in-law Andy (Justin Kirk), her late husband's brother, and Lupita, the slacker maid of Hispanic descent. Also living at Agrestic are Nancy's accountant Doug Wilson (Kevin Nealon), lawyer Dean Hodes (Andy Milder) with his wife Celia (Elizabeth Perkins) and daughter Isabelle (Allie Grant), and her marijuana suppliers Heylia, Conrad and Vaneeta.
Soon Nancy is faced with the risks and dangers of her job and after discovering that her new partner Peter Scottson (Martin Donovan) is a DEA agent she decides to leave him. He informs her that he knows all about her business, so the two decide to marry in secret so Peter can't testify against her. Nancy and Conrad expand their business by building a greenhouse and starting to grow weed, which inevitably brings them into conflict with local marijuana growers. Nancy confesses to her friend and business partner that she has no feelings for Peter, but is only with him out of interest. Agent Scottson, discovering the betrayal, blackmails them both by ordering them to sell all their stuff and hand over the proceeds to him so they won't be arrested. Things come to a head when Nancy finds herself in the middle of a gang fight: Peter is killed by one of the gangsters and, by a series of unfortunate coincidences, she is forced to work for U-Turn (Page Kennedy), a drug dealer and gang leader. With the latter's death, Nancy is finally free and finds protection in Guillermo García Gómez (Guillermo Dìaz), with whom she enters the business world. To help her eliminate the competition, he sets a fire that destroys the town of Agrestic.
After the fire, Nancy and her family are forced to flee, so they move to Ren Mar, to her father-in-law's house. Guillermo commissions her to run a maternity shop, which he runs with his enemy/friend Celia and which is actually a cover for a tunnel used to traffic marijuana between California and Mexico. Tired of the monotony of her job as a shop assistant and after Guillermo's rejection, Nancy goes into business with Esteban Reyes (Demián Bichir), head of the Mexican cartel and mayor of Tijuana. She also begins a romantic relationship with him. When it is discovered that the tunnel was also used to traffic arms and young prostitutes, and overcome with guilt, Nancy decides to warn the DEA and Guillermo and other members of the clan are arrested by the feds. She only manages to avoid Eisteban's revenge because she turns out to be pregnant. After their marriage and the birth of their son Steven Ray, Nancy's peace of mind is thwarted by Pilar Zuazo, an influential political leader who takes a dim view of Esteban's union with a non-Mexican woman. When she threatens to kill Nancy's children, Shane beats her to death with a cricket bat.
Nancy and her family are once again on the run and embark on a journey across the United States, pursued by Esteban, who wants his son back, and the FBI, who are trying to solve the murder of Pilar Zuazo. As the Botwins are about to leave the country, Esteban manages to catch up with them at the airport, detaining Nancy and Stevie while Andy, Silas, Shane and Doug board a flight to Copenhagen. To escape certain death at the hands of Esteban, she turns herself in to the FBI for Pilar's murder and has her husband (who will die in prison at the hands of another convict) arrested as well.
Three years after her arrest, Nancy is released on parole and finds it difficult to reintegrate into society and find a job. She also has to fight with her sister Jill Price-Gray (Jennifer Jason Leigh) for custody of little Stevie, now four years old. He later achieves financial and emotional stability when he goes back into business with Heylia to deal marijuana and reaches an agreement with Jill over custody of their son. When everything seems to be going in her favour, Tim Scottson (son of her second husband, Peter Scottson) shoots Nancy, holding her responsible for his father's death. Nancy survives the shooting and, after a long period of rehabilitation, is ready to start over and change her life. On another occasion we find the woman involved in selling marijuana, but now legally, for a pharmaceutical company. Then the woman, sensing that the new frontier in the sale of tobacco and cigarettes is precisely marijuana, and realising that the legalisation of the plant is imminent, decides to invest her money in this direction, asking for help from Guillermo, now released from prison, and Conrad, who is about to get married.
The end of the series is set in the indefinite near future (about eight years in the future). Nancy is now a successful woman who has made her fortune with the legalisation of marijuana and owns a chain of some 50 shops. We learn that she was married to David Bloom (David Julian Hirsh), her rabbi neighbour, and that she is widowed again, having been killed in a car accident. On the occasion of Stevie's bar mitzvah, her family and friends gather to celebrate. Silas is a marijuana grower, has a daughter and is married to Megan (Shoshannah Stern), who harbours hostility towards Nancy and prevents him from getting close to his granddaughter. Shane is a cop with a drinking problem and his mother convinces him to enter rehab. Andy, who has found the courage to leave Nancy for good, has made a new life for himself in Ren Mar, where he has a daughter and owns a restaurant. Stevie learns her father's true identity, abandons Judaism and decides to go away to college, recognizing Nancy as the most important figure in her life. Dean lives on a boat, his daughter Isabelle, who has had a sex change, calls herself Bruce, and Doug, who has founded a religion of which he is the spiritual leader, makes peace with his son Josh (Justin Chatwin). After an initial hesitation, Nancy decides to sell her business to Starbucks. She finds herself alone, but at the same time unattached and ready to discover what life has in store for her now.
In the last scene, Nancy, Doug, Silas, Shane and Andy are outside in the snow, smoking together and laughing for no apparent reason.

Cansada de la monotonía de su trabajo como dependienta y tras el rechazo de Guillermo, Nancy hace negocios con Esteban Reyes (Demián Bichir), jefe del cártel mexicano y alcalde de Tijuana. Con él también inicia una relación sentimental. Cuando se descubre que el túnel también se utilizaba para traficar con armas y jóvenes prostitutas, y presa de la culpa, Nancy decide avisar a la DEA y Guillermo y otros miembros del clan son detenidos por los federales. La mujer sólo consigue evitar la venganza de Eisteban porque resulta estar embarazada. Tras su matrimonio y el nacimiento de su hijo Steven Ray, la tranquilidad de Nancy se ve frustrada por Pilar Zuazo, una líder política muy influyente que ve con malos ojos la unión de Esteban con una mujer no mexicana. Cuando ésta amenaza a Nancy con matar a sus hijos, Shane la golpea mortalmente con un bate de cricket.
Nancy y su familia se dan de nuevo a la fuga y emprenden un viaje por Estados Unidos perseguidos por Esteban, que quiere recuperar a su hijo, y el FBI, que intenta esclarecer el asesinato de Pilar Zuazo. Cuando los Botwin están a punto de abandonar el país, Esteban consigue alcanzarlos en el aeropuerto, deteniendo a Nancy y Stevie mientras Andy, Silas, Shane y Doug embarcan en un vuelo con destino a Copenhague. Para escapar de una muerte segura a manos de Estaban se entrega al FBI por el asesinato de Pilar y hace que arresten también a su marido (que morirá en prisión a manos de otro convicto).
Tres años después de su detención, Nancy sale en libertad condicional y le resulta difícil reintegrarse en la sociedad y encontrar un trabajo. También tiene que luchar con su hermana Jill Price-Gray (Jennifer Jason Leigh) por la custodia de la pequeña Stevie, que ahora tiene cuatro años. Más tarde consigue alcanzar la estabilidad económica y emocional cuando vuelve a hacer negocios con Heylia para traficar con marihuana y llega a un acuerdo con Jill por la custodia de su hijo. Cuando todo parece ir a su favor, Tim Scottson (hijo de su segundo marido, Peter Scottson) dispara a Nancy, responsabilizándola de la muerte de su padre. Nancy sobrevive al disparo y, tras un largo periodo de rehabilitación, está dispuesta a empezar de nuevo y cambiar de vida. En otra ocasión encontramos a la mujer involucrada en la venta de marihuana, pero ahora de forma legal, para una empresa farmacéutica. Nos enteramos de que estuvo casada con David Bloom (David Julian Hirsh), su vecino rabino, y que ha vuelto a enviudar, ya que él murió en un accidente de coche. Con motivo del bar mitzvah de Stevie, su familia y amigos se reúnen para celebrarlo. Silas es cultivador de marihuana, tiene una hija y está casado con Megan (Shoshannah Stern), que alberga hostilidad hacia Nancy y le impide acercarse a su nieta. Shane es un policía con problemas con el alcohol y su madre le convence para que entre en rehabilitación. Andy, que ha encontrado el valor para abandonar definitivamente a Nancy, se ha hecho una nueva vida en Ren Mar, donde tiene una hija y es propietario de un restaurante. Weeds is one of the best television productions of recent times, where marijuana trafficking is just an excuse to take us into the deepest depths of American mentalities and morals.
With an unspoken denunciation of society's hypocrisy on this issue.
Don't be fooled by the first few minutes of the first episode, nothing is what it seems in this ultra-Yankee, conservative and idyllic society... The series is getting better and better, and each episode is better than the last.
Despite the fact that the series ended more than a decade ago, it is surprising that the IMDB site registers such a high popularity index among the audience, and no wonder, because at the time it was the series that everyone was talking about, assuring that the naturalness of the performances of its cast were such that they made a completely addictive show.
Black humour seems to be the key to Weeds, being the most acclaimed by viewers, although there are those who mention that the fact that the series focuses so much on maintaining a comedy routine, prevents a correct development of the characters, so they feel the same in each season.
Weeds es una de las mejores producciones televisivas de los últimos tiempos, dónde el tráfico de marihuana sólo es una excusa para adentrarnos en los más profundos vericuetos de las mentalidades y morales estadounidenses.
Con una tácita denuncia a la hipocresía de la sociedad en este tema.
No se dejen engañar por los primeros minutos del primer episodio, nada es lo que parece en esa sociedad ultrayanki, conservadora e idílica... La serie va ganando enteros y enteros y cada capítulo es mejor que el anterior.
Pese a que la serie finalizó hace más de una década, es sorprendente que el sitio IMDB registre un índice de popularidad tan alto entre la audiencia, y no es para menos, pues en su momento fue la serie de la que todos hablaban, asegurando que la naturalidad de las actuaciones de su elenco eran tal que hacían un show completamente adictivo.
El humor negro parece ser la clave de Weeds, siendo lo más aclamado por los televidentes, aunque hay quienes mencionan que el hecho de que la serie se centre tanto en mantener una rutina de comedia, impide un correcto desarrollo de los personajes, por lo que se sienten iguales en cada temporada.
