today I want to share with all users a movie that did not transcend too much commercially despite being very well made.
It is Un Saco de Canicas also released under the name of Una Bolsa de Canicas or Una Bolsa de Bolitas since in some Latin American countries this name is generally given to marbles. The film can be considered to all intents and purposes as a remake of the 1976 film directed by Jacques Doillon.
Because it deals with a subject that is always painful and gives rise to controversy -such as the Holocaust- the filming had its production problems from the very beginning.
By a quirk of fate I am quite familiar with Nice and its surroundings and the places where it was filmed. For that reason it caught my attention when I read (at that time I was living in Italy, a mere 200 kms from Nice) that a Nazi party flag had been hung on the door of the local prefecture of Nice in protest to the subject matter of the film.
Perhaps for that reason, or because of the plot and production requirements, a couple of months later the shooting was moved to Prague and Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic.

Se trata de Un Saco de Canicas también estrenada con el nombre de Una Bolsa de Canicas o Una Bolsa de Bolitas ya que en algunos países de Latinoamérica se le da -en general- este nombre a las canicas. La película puede considerarse a todos los efectos como un remake del film de 1976 dirigido por Jacques Doillon.
Por tratar de un tema siempre doloroso y que da origen a controversias como el holocausto- la filmación tuvo sus problemas de producción desde el mismo inicio.
Por una casualidad del destino conozco bastante bien Niza y sus alrededores y los lugares donde se rodó. Por ese motivo me llamó la atención cuando leí (en esos momentos estaba viviendo en Italia a escasos 200 kms de Niza) que había sido colgada una bandera del partido nazista en la puerta de la prefectura local de Niza en protesta a la temática del film.
Tal vez por ese motivo, o por caracter1=sticas del argumento y exigencias de la producción, un par de meses más tarde el rodaje se trasladó a Praga y Karlovy Vary en la República Checa.
The plot places us in French territory occupied by the Nazis during the Second World War and the attempt of Maurice and Joseph, two young Jewish brothers who try to cross the occupied country to reach free France.
To do so, they must abandon their family and equip themselves with a great deal of cunning, ingenuity and courage to overcome all the dangers they will encounter on their way. The goal is to reunite the whole family back in the free zone in the south of France.
The name of the film is due to the metaphorical sense that, from a child's perspective seems to relativize the horror, and show us the ups and downs of life that, inexorable as a marble rolling at random, stumble and bounce off the ground a thousand times, like the blows that we must assume to life, especially our early childhood.
Separated from their parents, both children find themselves in the middle of the madness of a war in which there seems to be no room for feelings. They will meet again as a family all together on the Côte d'Azur until they end up in a village in the heart of the Massif Central where they will witness the end of the German occupation and the revenge towards the French collaborators of the Nazi regime by the French resistance.
Throughout their journey, the two children will gradually lose their childhood innocence and meet all kinds of characters that they would never have dreamed of meeting in real life.
However, it is these same characters who will help them to cross enemy lines and get them to safety, while other people who, perhaps from their innocent imagination, were more trustworthy and could be considered their friends, betray them and try to trick them into revealing their true religion and creed in order to hand them over to the occupation forces and gain money and/or safety in the midst of a France divided in half, divided between patriots, deserters, collaborators and German forces.
They will learn about prison, the interrogations they will be subjected to in order to intimidate them and try to get them to denounce probable collaborators of the resistance forces, and other execrable places of detention and torture that a child should never set foot in, but also and most importantly, they will learn that some friendships are worth gold even if they are poor and ragged on the outside and others only seem so but in reality are worthless.
At the end of their misadventures they will be helped by the church that will become a powerful ally, not only providing them with forged papers to change their identity and thus facilitate their freedom but also, given their youth and inexperience, some advice in those hard times that can save their lives in risky situations.
La trama nos sitúa en territorio francés ocupado por los nazis durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial y el intento de Maurice y Joseph dos jóvenes hermanos judíos que tratan de cruzar el país ocupado para llegar a la Francia libre.
Para lograrlo deberán abandonar a su familia y dotarse de una gran dosis de astucia, ingenio y coraje para sortear todos los peligros que encontrarán en su camino. El objetivo es reunir a toda la familia de nuevo en la zona libre del sur de Francia.
El nombre de la película se debe al sentido metafórico que, desde una perspectiva infantil parece parec relativizar el horror, y mostrarnos los vaivenes de la vida que, inexorable como una canica rodando al azar, tropiezan y rebotan contra el suelo una y mil veces, como los golpes que debemos asumir a la vida, especialmente nuestra nuestra primera infancia.
Separados de sus padres ambos niños se encuentran en medio de la locura de una guerra en la que no parece haber espacio para los sentimientos y volverán a reencontrarse en familia todos juntos en la Costa Azul hasta acabar en un pueblo en el corazón del Macizo Central donde podráan ser testimonios del final de la ocupación alemana y la venganza hacia los colaboradores franceses del régimen nazista por parte de la resistencia francesa.
En todo su periplo ambos niños irán perdiendo de a poco la inocencia infantil y conociendo a todo tipo de personajes que en la vida realidad nunca se hubieran soñado de encontrar.
Sin embargo, son estos mismos personajes, los que los ayudarán a atravesar las líneas enemigos y ponerlos a salvo, mientras que otras personas que tal ve desde su inocente imaginación eran más confiables y podrían ser considerados sus amigos, los traicionan buscarán engañarlos para que revelen su verdadera religión y credo para entregarlos a las fuerzas de ocupación y ganar dinero y/o seguridad en medio de una Francia partida por la mitad, dividida entre patriotas, desertores, colaboradores y fuerzas alemanas.
Conocerán la cárcel, los interrogatorios a que serán sometidos para intimidirlos e intentar que denuncien a probables colaboradores de la fuerzas de la resistencia, y otros lugares execrables de detención y tortura que jamás un niño debería pisar, pero también y es lo más importante, aprenderán que hay algunas amistades valen oro por más que exteriormente sean pobres y andrajosas y otras solamente lo parecen pero que en realidad no valen nada.
Al final de sus desventuras serán ayudados por la iglesia que se convertirá en un poderoso aliado, no solo proporcionándoles papeles falsificados para cambiar su identidad y de esta manera facilitar su libertad sino también, dada su juventud e inexperiencia, algunos consejos en esos tiempos duros que pueden salvarles la vida en situaciones de riesgo.

It is a good film with excellent cinematography that tells a true story like so many thousands of others with absolute cinematic honesty, without being overly sweetening or melodramatic.
A powerful story that has its strength in the strength of family ties and the loss of innocence during childhood in a particular situation such as the persecution of Jewish families during World War II by the Nazi regime.
In some ways we could compare it to Louis Malle's sublime Goodbye, Boys filmed in 1987 and in other ways it is much more pragmatic and realistic than its 1976 predecessor.
There are excellent moments in the film that seem to embody the very synthesis of hate, of love - embodied in the doctor played by Christian Clavier - or of forgiveness, in the scene of the collaborationist family.
In short, it is a film that speaks to us beyond the historical moment, of lost innocence, betrayal, fear, guilt, solidarity and all the human elements that make survival in certain circumstances.
Absolutely recommended.
Es una buena película con una excelente fotografía que cuenta una historia real como otras tantas miles con absoluta honestidad cinematográfica, sin ser demasiado edulcorante ni melodramática
Un relato poderoso que tiene su punto de fuerza en la fortaleza de los vínculos familiares y la pérdida de la inocencia durante la infancia en una situación particular como fue la persecución a las familias judías durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial por parte del régimen nazista.
En cierta manera podríamos compararla con la sublime Adiós, muchachos de Louis Malle filmada en 1987 y de otras maneras es mucho más pragmática y realista de su antecesora del año 1976.
Hay momentos excelentes de la películas que parecen encarnar la sintesis misma del odio , del amor -encarnado en el médico cuyo rol está a cargo de Christian Clavier o del perdón, en la escena de la familia colaboracionista.
En definitiva, es una película que nos habla más allá del momento histórico, de la inocencia perdida, de la traición, del miedo, la culpa, la solidaridad y todos los elementos humanos que hacen de la supervivencia en determinadas circunstancias.
Absolutamentre recomendable.
