Will Hunting (Good Will Hunting) is a 1997 film directed by Gus Van Sant and starring Matt Damon, Robin Williams, Ben Affleck, Stellan Skarsgård and Minnie Driver.

Shot in Boston, Massachusetts, it tells the story of Will Hunting (Matt Damon), a troubled, self-taught child prodigy with many misdemeanours behind him, who works as a cleaner at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Despite his knowledge and ability to solve high-level mathematical problems, surpassing even academics, Will must learn to confront and overcome his fear of abandonment in order to seriously love and trust the people who love and care about him. Will Hunting is the story of a man trying to improve his interpersonal relationships and open up to other people, trying to learn to make the most of his incredible potential.

The film is dedicated to the memory of the poet Allen Ginsberg and the writer William S. Burroughs, both of whom died in 1997.

A pesar de sus conocimientos y su capacidad para resolver problemas matemáticos de alto nivel, superando incluso a los académicos, Will debe aprender a enfrentarse y superar su miedo al abandono para poder querer y confiar seriamente en las personas que le quieren y se preocupan por él. In an impoverished neighbourhood in Boston, 20-year-old Will Hunting lives a precarious and uncomfortable life with a few friends, most notably his best friend Chuckie, and makes a living cleaning floors in the mathematics department of the famous Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In the evenings, he goes out and enjoys drinking gallons of beer with his mates and often gets into street fights; he also has a lot of trouble relating to other people and, apart from the small group of friends he hangs out with, doesn't know anyone else.

However, in his spare time, aided by a prodigious photographic memory, he reads many books of all kinds and possesses a vast culture in completely different fields (history, mathematics, philosophy, literature, science, etc.). However, Will's true talent reveals itself in mathematics, which he masters to the highest and most sophisticated levels thanks to his enormous capacity for logic and calculation.

One day, while scrubbing the school floors, he finds a very difficult problem on the blackboard in a corridor: the proposed exercise was written by maths teacher Gerald Lambeau as a challenge for all his students. Many boys try to solve it, but none of them succeeds. Will observes the problem while cleaning the floor, and when he gets home after a night out with his friends, he studies it and solves it, writing it on the bathroom mirror. The next day he arrives before school work starts and while cleaning that corridor he completes the exercise on the blackboard.

News that someone has solved the exercise spreads through the faculty in the blink of an eye, and in Professor Lambeau's next class there are many people present who want to know who the mysterious genius is who has solved the problem. Lambeau says he doesn't know and invites him to show himself to the public and reap the deserved glory, but no one shows up. Lambeau decides to test this person with a new exercise much more complex than the previous one: find all the non-homomomorphic graphs composed of ten nodes.

While he is busy writing the solution, Will is discovered by Professor Lambeau and one of his assistants. At first the two think he is just smearing the blackboards and scold him; he runs off, scolding the two, who can't even see his face. Then the deputy discovers that the boy has really solved the problem.

Meanwhile, Will meets Skylar, a Harvard alumna, but is arrested for a street fight. Lambeau visits him and tells him that he can get his freedom as long as he attends maths classes and sees a psychologist weekly.

After taunting and scaring many psychologists, Will meets Dr. Sean McGuire, with whom, after a hesitant start, he establishes a good relationship, and who will be by his side in difficult times. McGuire comes from the same background as him, he was also abused by his father and cancer killed his wife. For Will, the problems arising from his genius outweigh the benefits, in fact Lambeau constantly gets him interviews for jobs that he consistently turns down (in one of them he even sends Chuckie instead), and this ignites Lambeau's anger, to which he adds envy when he realises that Will is making incredible progress and has already far surpassed him.

Even his girlfriend, although deeply in love with him, finds it hard to accept that she is forced to study for hours to get bad results while he is able to do better in a short time (a typical example is when he proposes a date, she says she cannot because she has been trying to solve a complex chemistry problem for days and the deadline is dangerously close, so he goes off alone to a café and comes back to her a few minutes later with a napkin with the solution to the problem written on it). He also has serious doubts about their relationship, due to his grumpy nature and inability to open up to others.

Thanks to Sean's help, Will realises that he doesn't have to do the jobs Lambeau proposes and that he shouldn't waste his chance with Skylar.

En un barrio empobrecido de Boston, Will Hunting, de 20 años, vive de forma precaria e incómoda con unos pocos amigos, entre los que destaca su mejor amigo Chuckie, y se gana la vida limpiando suelos en el departamento de matemáticas del famoso Instituto Tecnológico de Massachusetts (MIT). La noticia de que alguien ha resuelto el ejercicio recorre la facultad en un abrir y cerrar de ojos y en la siguiente clase del profesor Lambeau hay mucha gente presente que quiere saber quién es el misterioso genio que ha resuelto el problema. Lambeau dice que no lo sabe y le invita a mostrarse ante el público y cosechar la merecida gloria, pero nadie se presenta. Lambeau decide poner a prueba a esta persona con un nuevo ejercicio mucho más complejo que el anterior: encontrar todos los grafos no homomomórficos compuestos por diez nodos.

Mientras está ocupado escribiendo la solución, Will es descubierto por el profesor Lambeau y uno de sus ayudantes. Al principio los dos creen que sólo está manchando las pizarras y le riñen; él sale corriendo, regañando a los dos, que ni siquiera pueden verle la cara. Entonces el ayudante descubre que el chico ha resuelto realmente el problema.

Mientras tanto, Will conoce a Skylar, una alumna de Harvard, pero es detenido por una pelea callejera. Lambeau le visita y le dice que puede conseguir su libertad siempre que asista a clases de matemáticas y acuda semanalmente a un psicólogo.

Tras burlarse y asustar a muchos psicólogos, Will conoce al Dr. Sean McGuire, con quien, tras un comienzo dubitativo, establece una buena relación, y que estará a su lado en los momentos difíciles. McGuire procede de los mismos orígenes que él, también fue maltratado por su padre y el cáncer mató a su mujer. Para Will, los problemas derivados de su genialidad son mayores que los beneficios, de hecho Lambeau le consigue constantemente entrevistas para trabajos que él rechaza sistemáticamente (en una de ellas incluso envía a Chuckie en su lugar), y esto enciende la ira de Lambeau a la que añade la envidia cuando se da cuenta de que Will progresa increíblemente y que ya le ha superado con creces.

Incluso a su novia, aunque está profundamente enamorada de él, le cuesta aceptar que se vea obligada a estudiar durante horas para obtener malos resultados mientras que él es capaz de hacerlo mejor en poco tiempo (un ejemplo típico es cuando él le propone una cita, ella dice que no puede porque lleva días intentando resolver un complejo problema de química y el plazo se acerca peligrosamente, así que él se va solo a un café y vuelve a ella unos minutos después con una servilleta con la solución del problema escrita). Además, tiene serias dudas sobre su relación, debido a su carácter gruñón y a su incapacidad para abrirse a los demás.

Gracias a la ayuda de Sean, Will comprende que no tiene por qué hacer los trabajos que Lambeau le propone y que no debe desperdiciar la oportunidad con Skylar.

When we talk about Will Hunting - Rebel Genius, our minds cannot but immediately fly to an image that is fixed in our hearts. It was 23 March 1998, live from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, on Oscar night. Amidst what was more of a collective embrace than an ovation, an emotional and trembling Robin Williams took the stage to collect the Best Supporting Actor statuette. He could hardly speak for the happiness as he clutched in his hands the Oscar, which at the time was still full of meaning, now finally in the hands of what was the most talented comic actor of the post-war period and certainly the most loved.

Today, exactly 27 years after its theatrical release, celebrating one of the most beautiful coming-of-age films of all time, one of the cinematic symbols by definition of the 1990s, also means remembering how this film is still incredibly topical today in telling us about the difficulty of living and living with ourselves.

Cuando hablamos de Will Hunting - El genio rebelde, nuestra mente no puede sino volar inmediatamente a una imagen que está fija en nuestro corazón. Hoy, exactamente 27 años después de su estreno en salas, celebrar una de las más bellas películas de madurez de todos los tiempos, uno de los símbolos cinematográficos por definición de los años 90, significa también recordar cómo esta película sigue siendo hoy increíblemente actual al hablarnos de la dificultad de vivir y de vivir con nosotros mismos.
