I'm a big fan of fantasy movies and it's the category that I mostly browsed with whenever I'm looking for something to watch on Netflix. Too bad there are very few selections in this category (at least in my region). From time to time I do this random selection in which I just simply click on a movie without checking the trailer and that's how I found the Mortal Engines.
Thousands of years after civilization was destroyed by a cataclysmic event, humankind has adapted and a new way of living has evolved. Gigantic moving cities now roam the Earth, ruthlessly preying upon smaller traction towns. Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan)—who hails from a Lower Tier of the great traction city of London—finds himself fighting for his own survival after he encounters the dangerous fugitive Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar). Two opposites, whose paths should never have crossed, forge an unlikely alliance that is destined to change the course of the future.
The movie has a very interesting cast which mostly from The Hobbit trilogy which could explain the kind of feel of the visual effects for this movie. It's top-notch and the presentation is smooth throughout the entire movie. Everything is designed spot-on!
If there is one thing that I struggled with is that the backstory is not presented that I could easily grasp. It's a new concept and so I felt like it could have been allowed more moments in the movie to be explained to get the feel for the rest of the movie. Although the first part is quite confusing (IMHO).
I just wish that they could have shown more on how things came about in the past. And how the people of the past have made this world catastrophic.
Approaching the mid part of the movie has become more interesting as more of the characters are giving me more of the idea about the story.
When it comes to the action scenes, the sequences are awesome except for some of the inconsistencies in the delivery. There are a few scenes that are not convincing enough that I feel need more consideration. It could have given more thought to the execution of the event but I guess they focused more on the last part of the movie (which I think is the best).
