As a writer, I rarely find TV shows that captivate me. However, many years ago, in the era before cable or satellite television, my viewing options were limited. It was during this time that I had the chance to witness the evolution of shows like Moonlighting and Alf. The intriguing developments in these shows find a parallel in Permanent Midnight, a 1998 drama directed by David Veloz.

Based on the autobiographical book by Jerry Stahl, a former top television writer in 1980s Hollywood, the film follows Stahl (portrayed by Ben Stiller) as he transitions from flipping burgers for $5 an hour to reminiscing about his days earning $5000 a week. The plot delves into Stahl's past as a successful writer in Hollywood, where his scripts were in high demand and his personal life intersected with his professional success. However, his descent into heroin addiction begins to unravel everything he has worked for.

Permanent Midnight, both the book and the film, serves as a voyeuristic exploration of the downfall of a celebrity. It offers a glimpse into the dark realities of drug addiction and the consequences of fame and fortune. Ben Stiller's portrayal of Stahl is a standout performance, showcasing his dramatic range with raw honesty. While the film may falter in its pacing and character development, it still holds educational value in its portrayal of the creative processes in Hollywood.

Overall, Permanent Midnight may not be a perfect film, but it sheds light on important themes and offers a compelling narrative.
