In a world now dominated by cell phones and GPS, it's difficult to imagine a time when parts of the world map were still blank, and cartographers had to rely on imagination to fill in the gaps - often in the form of sea monsters. Yet, even today, there are still some areas that evoke a sense of mystery and adventure. One of the most famous of these is the Bermuda Triangle, the setting of the 1996 television film directed by Ian Toynton.

The story follows the journey of Dr. John Everman (played by Sam Behrens) and Dr. Grace Everman (played by Susanna Thompson), two married physicians who take their children, Lisa (played by Annie Jakub) and Sam (played by David Gallagher), on a dream vacation in the form of a boat cruise in the Bermuda Triangle. When their boat is hit by a freak storm, they find themselves shipwrecked on a mysterious, uncharted island. As they explore the island, they encounter others who have suffered a similar fate and seem unable to return to civilization. They soon realize that the stars in the night sky don't match Earth's, leading them to accept that they are stranded in an alien world. With Sam's diabetes becoming an urgent concern due to dwindling insulin supplies, the Everman family must find a way back home.

Featuring familiar faces like Jerry Hardin and Naomi Watts, this lesser-known television film uses the Bermuda Triangle legend as a backdrop for a Robinson Crusoe-style family adventure. Director Ian Toynton, known for his work in British television, effectively utilizes the tropical locations and underwater cinematography to create an engaging visual experience. Despite its strengths, the film's open ending suggests it was intended as a pilot for a more ambitious TV series that never materialized.

RATING: 5/10 (++ )
