Few film experiences are as disappointing as those that start with promise and end in disappointment. One such film is Mr. Stitch, a 1995 science fiction thriller written and directed by Roger Avary.

The plot begins in a secret laboratory where a strange creature (played by Wil Wheaton) seeks to uncover his identity. Dr. Rue Wakerman (played by Rutger Hauer), the head of the project, reveals that the creature, known as Subject 03, is a man created from organs and tissue of 88 donors, with artificial memories implanted. Subject 03, now named Lazarus, is intellectually curious and spends his time learning about the world. However, he begins to have nightmares and discovers he has inherited memories from the donors. With the help of psychiatrist Dr. Elizabeth English (played by Nia Peeples), Lazarus escapes the laboratory and uncovers the truth behind his creation.

Mr. Stitch is a unique film that delves into ethical and philosophical discussions uncommon in science fiction. Avary, known for his work with Quentin Tarantino, creates a surreal atmosphere with minimal special effects. Wil Wheaton and Rutger Hauer deliver powerful performances, supported by Tomandandy's atmospheric music. However, the film falters in the second half as the low budget becomes evident. The plot descends into clichés, particularly with the introduction of a jingoistic US general (played by Michael Harris) that detracts from the serious tone. Despite its initial promise, Mr. Stitch ultimately disappoints, leaving viewers feeling cheated.
