Avatar is a 2009 science fiction film co-edited, co-produced, written and directed by James Cameron and starring Sam Worthington, Stephen Lang, Zoë Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Giovanni Ribisi and Michelle Rodriguez. Costing 237 million dollars, Avatar has so far grossed around three billion, becoming the film that has grossed the most in the history of cinema. It was distributed in theaters around the world between December 16 and 18, 2009. Italy and Italian-speaking Switzerland, where it was released on January 15, 2010, are the penultimate countries in the world where it was distributed, due to the substantial cinematographic competition that occurs during the Christmas holidays.
The film was released in the traditional 2D format, but has also seen a wide distribution in 3D and 3D IMAX. Cameron himself, who is a strong supporter of 3D as the future of cinema, stated that the experience would be more complete by watching Avatar in three dimensions, since the film was specifically designed by him to be seen in that way.
Avatar is also the first film to use the new logo of 20th Century Fox, animated by Blue Sky Studios, creators of Ice Age. The film won 3 Academy Awards in 2010: for best photography, best production design and best special effects. It is the first highest grossing film in history, before Titanic, The Avengers, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2.
In 2154, an interplanetary terrestrial company from Kansas, the RDA, intends to exploit the mineral deposits of Pandora, moon of the gas giant Polyphemus, belonging to the star system Alpha Centauri.
Pandora is a primordial world, covered by rainforests, with trees up to three hundred meters tall, and is inhabited by various creatures, all decidedly spectacular, including sentient humanoids called Na'vi, on average even more than three meters tall and with striped blue skin. The air of the satellite is not breathable by humans unless they use filter masks, as it is contaminated by a mixture of toxic substances, so scientists have developed avatars, genetic hybrid bodies between humans and Na'vi without their own consciousness: through a mental interface, a man can transfer his soul and his consciousness into the body of the avatar and control it like his body. This connection is made by falling into a sort of coma inside a special technological capsule.
The RDA wants to exploit the satellite mainly for unobtanium, a ferrous crystal that has the unique ability in the galaxy to act as a superconductor at room temperature even up to its melting point, and which probably has the strongest magnetic field known among metals; its exploitation could solve the serious energy problems that have plagued the Earth for decades, and the most abundant deposits are mostly found in inaccessible places or of particular importance for the entire Na'vi species such as the Hallelujah Mountains or under the settlement of the Na'vi clan of the Omaticaya. While the diplomatic route taken by Dr. Grace Augustine seems to have no significant results, Colonel Miles Quaritch and the manager Parker Selfridge think of using force and prepare a military attack.
Meanwhile, the disabled former marine Jake Sully is called to replace his brother Tommy, killed during a robbery. The man was a scientist and the avatar that was supposed to govern was created specifically with his genetic code, and therefore only Jake, being his monozygotic twin, can now guide it. Jake is absolutely ignorant of everything about Pandora and the Na'vi, but he is excited by the possibility of being able to walk again, and accepts the deal offered to him by the colonel: an expensive surgical operation to get his legs back, in exchange for information for the attack.
During an expedition in the forest, Jake, Grace and his colleague Norm meet a Thanator, a predator, who wants to kill him but manages to lose him. In the evening, he clashes with the Viperwolves, small and aggressive nocturnal predators, but is saved by Neytiri, a Na'vi warrior, and Jake tries to thank her but she says that killing is sad. Jake, however, makes himself known to the Omaticaya and wants to learn about their habits and customs. Despite the distrust of the warrior Tsu'tey, Jake is accompanied by Neytiri in learning about her people and their empathic relationship with the creatures of Pandora, a phenomenon that according to Grace arises from a biochemical bond between the roots of each tree, which unites as if they were synapses.
Jake is finally welcomed by the tribe, learns their customs and falls in love with Neytiri, who reciprocates. However, he is unable to prevent the attack on their village and the Omaticaya see him as a traitor, tying him together with Grace. But the military arrives and begins to bomb the village, knocking down the tree-house and the Na'vi flee in despair.

I admit that Avatar is not the type of film that I like, but it is a magnificently resolved film in terms of special effects, script and performances by all its actors. The plot is the typical one in which the protagonists adopt the roles of "good and bad", without giving their characters too much depth, and, although the film is perhaps a little too long, at no time does the viewer think about looking at the clock or wishing for the film to end, but rather the opposite. I recommend it for all kinds of tastes because it is a film that goes beyond the sum of its parts.

Reconozco que Avatar no es el tipo de cine que a mí me gusta pero es un film magnificamente resuelto en cuanto a efectos especiales, guión e interpretaciones de todos sus actores. El argumento es el típico en el que los protagonistas adopatn los roles de "buenos y malos", sin darle a sus personajes demasiada profundidad, y, aunque la pelicula es quizá un pelín demasiado larga, en ningún momento el espectador piensa en mirar el reloj ni desear que termine ya la pelicula, sino mas bien lo contrario. La recomiendo para todo tipo de gustos porque es un filme que va más allá de la suma de sus partes. Indispensable.
