The Indian Runner is a 1991 film directed by Sean Penn, in his directorial debut. The film is characterized by the fact that the plot is entirely inspired by a single song by Bruce Springsteen, Highway Patrolman, from the 1982 album Nebraska. The characters, settings and narrative style are a faithful transposition of the song, of which the film becomes a tribute and an extension. The executive producer was Steve Bannon.
The film is based on the relationship and conflict of two brothers, Joe and Frank Roberts. Joe is the sheriff of a small Nebraska farming town, Plattsmouth, Frank is a soldier in the United States Army.
Sheriff Joe Roberts leads a quiet life and is married to Maria, a young Mexican girl for whom he had to fight against the racist prejudices of his father. The lives of the two separated brothers are shaken by the death of their father: Frank is reunited with his brother after returning from the Vietnam War.
He has become a sullen and gloomy man, unable to stay away from trouble. Joe, patient and loving with his new brother, tries to rebuild a life for himself and his brother, remembering the childhood they spent together. Frank has a relationship with a local girl, Dorothy, who gives birth to his son, giving him a semblance of hope and happiness in his new community. However, Frank Roberts' nature and loneliness cannot change: he kills Cesar, the manager of the only bar in town. The brother sheriff then struggles between the love he feels for his brother and his integrity as a policeman: he pursues him to the border and decides to stop, leaving his brother free to escape.
The film ends with a quote from Tagore: (EN) "Every new child that is born brings the message that God has not yet given up on man." "Man" (Tagore) Despite featuring top-notch actors and using a particular script, the film, due to its themes, was distributed mainly on the independent film circuit and never became a large-scale commercial success. Indeed, it uses scenes of strong impact, impeccable direction but which may disturb some viewers, including male nudity and a birth filmed in great detail. Dedicated to the memory of Hal Ashby, Frank Bianco and John Cassavetes, the film was presented at the Directors' Fortnight of the 44th Cannes Film Festival.
