Why It's More Important to Know How to Handle Success Than Just Getting It

Without a doubt, the greatest teacher we have is failure. Without a question. Ironically, loss has countless lessons to impart while prosperity doesn't really teach you anything. I suppose this is why there are so many failures along the way to success.

Failure teaches us how to handle failure, which is what it takes to succeed in life in a meaningful way. It shapes us into the individuals we must become in order to manage success when we do eventually attain it.

Most individuals are unaware of this. Everyone aspires to millions of cash, homes, vehicles, or anything else they deem successful, but none considers whether they will truly be able to maintain all of it.

Even though we view it as the end, getting someplace is half the battle. Actually, the second half of the fight is staying there, and that's what follows next. How many times have we heard of someone achieving success in something just to go back to their same position later on? Far too frequently.

It appears that no matter what kind of harsh circumstances we face, humans tend to handle them poorly. The reason is that, rather than using our brains to make decisions, we let our emotions to rule us. Of course, there is intuition, but that's a whole other story.

Because of this, we typically react in an exaggerated way when we fail. We become completely devoid of hope, hopelessness, and clarity. Furthermore, when we achieve, we experience tremendous emotions once more, enter a euphoric state, and make foolish decisions. Nothing seems to be able to defeat us.

If one is to become capable of continuing to be successful, this is what must alter. Once we reach the pinnacle, decisions become even more crucial, so we need to control our emotions and use reason when making them. Character development therefore becomes crucial.

In this sense, acting and thinking as though you are just starting your trip is some of the best advice I have heard. Act and make choices as though you are just starting out, despite your great success. This will ultimately help to guarantee that you continue to be successful because it will keep you hungry and prevent you from being overconfident.
