What's helping me Live a more Mindful Life

What is mindfulness?
It is nothing but just living in the present moment with complete awareness of you and your space.

Seems to be very difficult right?

Sometimes the simplest things of life are the most difficult to do and that's what happens with us when it comes to living mindfully. Our mind is like a monkey, it just keeps jumping from one thought to another. There is hardly any moment in the day when we have no thoughts in our mind or that our mind is not occupied with something. Even when we go to sleep, we go to sleep with so many thoughts hovering on our mind. If we sit to pray, there are end number of thoughts coming to us, either about past or future. Any activity we are doing, our mind is somewhere else. We keep thinking and thinking and these endless thoughts are sometimes not leading us to anywhere and it is so much of an energy drain.

We keep thinking about future, but when that future arrives, we are still not with it and we are thinking again about our future. So, when do we become still in the present moment?

A few years back I had visited Sadhguru's Center Isha Foundation and stayed there for few days to learn some practices, which their program is called as Inner Engineering. It is a wonderful program where a lot of techniques are taught to live a life with full awareness. Till date I follow these practices and they have helped me a lot. They are simple, but what you need is dedication and will to do it on a daily basis. After that I attended many other sessions of different groups, to learn more and all of these experiences and learning have helped me at every stage of life to deal with my crises.

One has to make a conscious effort in bringing mindfulness to life. Thoughts will come to mind and that's ok, but one should not get stuck up with the thought. This is the practice that I was taught. Whenever there are irrelevant thoughts coming to mind and you are not in the moment, bring awareness to yourself, take a few deep breaths and think is that thought necessary to me in this particular moment. Will it change anything if you keep thinking about it. If the answer is Yes, then probably you can put in some energy in that thought, but if the answer is No, then you should choose to let it pass and say to yourself, that this thought is not important to me at this point of time, and it's not going to change anything for me, so let me pass it and let me be in present. When we keep doing this all the time, we will notice that we will bring mindfulness into our life.

Even when we are angry or we are in any emotion that is draining us out, we need to do this. We need to pause, breathe and then reflect on that emotion from the outside and most of the time we will understand that it is not necessary and it needs to pass. If we are sad for something, and if that situation is not going to change then there is no sense in being sad, rather we should think of solutions to tackle the situation.

We have to understand one thing, that our mind is one part of us and not us as a whole, so it should be in our control. The thing is that right now we as a whole are in control of this very small part of us which is our mind, and this mind dominates out life. If we learn to tame it and keep it in our control, trust me, half the problems of our life will be resolved. Majority of the problems of our life are of the mind, and we keep feeding them and growing them in our mind which leads to no good results, because we keep attracting that energy by feeding it. The moment we let go it, it will lose it's power and control over us.

My tools for bringing mindfulness to my life are Meditation, Deep Breathing, Soft Music, Yoga and Nature walks.

I always wanted to go to one of Sadhguru's Yoga center and see what inner Engeneering is all about. I have hear many positive reviews just like yours here.

Living in the present sounds so easy but is very difficult as Sadhguru likes to say
that we are worried about the past and worring for the future and not living in the present.

Incredible thoughtful post, thanks for sharing.

Have a nice day!

It's a beautiful experience at Isha, you should do it. I am sure you will like it. They teach many life enhancing techniques which are useful in our day to day life.
