When you make any move whether it is punch, kick, or any other strike, you use your energy and force. Your opponent also uses his energy and force to attack you. You can make different moves as a defense.
Attacker punches you and you also punch him. You can intercept the attacker's punch. You see the attacker's punch is coming. If you can hit him with a punch faster than his punch touching your body. You can defend yourself against punch without blocking.
Speed and power matter in a fight. What if your opponent is stronger and bigger than you are? Of course, he has some advantages. Because of having some advantages, you might find it difficult to meet force with force. You hit the attacker, it does not have that effect as you expect.
You find it hard to block his strikes. In order to defend yourself, you can redirect the attacker's energy and force. The attacker kicks you, you just move out of the way, redirect his leg in another direction. Here you are not stopping him. You just use your force to move his strikes in another direction.
You can grab his legs and move in the same direction and use your techniques to throw him away. You are able to do that although he is stronger than you are because you use his force and energy against him in order to take him down.
You cannot apply the same techniques against everyone. The attacker can have some background and skills. So have an open mind, observe your opponent, attack him, and at the same time, try to exploit his weakness.
There is something that you have to learn on your own. Your martial art instructor can guide, you have to learn it through training and experience. You can learn to redirect your opponent's energy and force, and in some situations, you can find it very useful for self defense.
