Mañanita on my special day

in manyanita •  last year

Manañita is a traditional way of a very simple celebration, usually attended by immediate family members only. It is simply a way of greeting a birthday celebrant by serenading her early morning with a special song to awaken the birthday celebrant. Later additions to the tradition are eating cake and giving of presents.

In the province, there are group of choirs who will do mañanita. Mostly, the family members contacted them to surprise the member of their family who will celebrate his/her birthday. They will gave flowers and lighted candles to the celebrant and singing birthday songs and other Catholic or Christian songs.
In the City this kind of surprise is rear but in my case, my family and in-laws initiated it. They surprised me on my birthday. They had a serenade to wake me up, singing birthday songs accompanied with music in YouTube. They also brought cake and other foods for us to have a salo-salo after wards. I really don't have an idea that they will be doing something like that. It surprised me a lot.
