That's right, they should have.
Sadly, here in Canada (and most doctors in the US also), the only test done for thyroid is TSH. This doesn't catch the majority of thyroid problems, but it's all the govt/insurance companies will pay for. Unless TSH is out of whack (which only happens in a few thyroid conditions) they won't test anything else. T3, T4, free T3, and free T4 are also very important. So are antibodies like TPO Ab. It's very hard to get tested for any of these. A lot of doctors don't even know the first thing about the thyroid even though it is one of the body's most important organs.
And when it's not working right you can get arrhythmias. It can disrupt all kinds of bodily function if there is a problem with it. I hear ya about proper testing.
Medically, we are all on our own. We really are.
