Hello!

Today I publish a post about my #lobook initiative. Here, I share my experience about a book, beginning from the buying and finishing with my personal review. You can read more about lobook, consulting my first Lobook post here on Blurt.

AND NOW, LET'S GO!

This new episode takes a cue from the Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens's novel, published with the title Search (2010). The Italian version I read is La Camera del Cielo, published a year later and curated by Mara Dompè. In the image below, you can see a cover picture from which I removed a few parts, trying to avoid possible direct advertisings.

And below, some slices of the inner pages:

I bought the book several months ago; specifically, the paperback format. There are multiple editions with different prices, major for the hard-cover version and minor for the softcover one. The first price I found surfing the web here in Italy is €10,00, and reaches €19.60 for the hard-cover edition.

TURNING PAGES

A room covered in strange but fascinating drawings is found. A group of descendants, united by a bond of blood and a blanket of mystery, persists in taking action to safeguard their secrets. A geneticist finds a trace in his DNA that unites him and some other kids, discovering that a common destiny underlies that DNA: no one has ever survived beyond the age of 26, and he has already turned 25.

The starting point is interesting. This vein of mystery with the story of the DNA sign and the premature death of its owner is very captivating. Even the spy book outline is no exception, with various groups determined to each chase their own goal to reveal or continue to maintain a hitherto hidden truth. However, I find that the development is lacking from more than one perspective.

First of all, the reiterations of events from the various points of view of the characters weigh down the narrative. This side is in my opinion too present to be ignored, and it definitely doesn't help. Then, there is the plot itself, which in my opinion is stretched a little too much with superficial scenes for the continuation of the text, and whose absence wouldn't affect the plot itself: this is another sore point, especially in a 500-page novel. Combining these two characteristics, I found it extremely difficult to keep my attention high. Furthermore, I think that neither of them helped in creating the mystery condition and suspense that provide the winning recipe in this genre of novels. Trying to recreate a summary, I realize that the plot isn't too bad, on the contrary. Just a little too diluted in scenes that are not very functional to the general thread, in my opinion. Considering that the writing is approximately correct, the rating I feel like leaving is a 3-stars for the general part, while I have to abandon myself to a skimpy 2-stars for the involvement rating.

Pages: 472

Genre: Spying, Action and adventure, Science fiction

PERSONAL RATING

For my personal rating of the book, I usually use two votes: a GENERAL VOTE, based on a more objective approach to the text (where I consider for example the author's way of writing, the plot, any errors found, etc), and an INVOLVEMENT VOTE, based instead on the effect that reading had on me (if it attracted me, if it intrigued and tempted me, if it gave me useful information, etc.). Each of the two ratings is marked with a number of stars, from one to 5.

In the case of Search or La camera del cielo, my personal response is 3 for the general vote and 2 for the involvement vote.
