Hello!

Today I publish a post about my #lobook initiative. Here, I share my experience about a book, beginning from the buying and finishing with my personal review. You can read more about lobook, consulting my first Lobook post here on Blurt.

AND NOW, LET'S GO!

This new episode talks about the John Stephens' novel, published with the title Black Reckoning (dated back to 2015 for the native version). The Italian version I read is L'atlante di tenebra, first publication in Italy dates back to 2015, curated by Silvia Petersson, illustrations by Fabio Timpanaro. In the image below, you can see a cover picture from which I removed a few parts, trying to avoid possible direct advertisings.

And below, some slices of the inner pages:

I bought the book several months ago, in the paperback format. There are multiple editions with different prices, major for the hard-cover version and minor for the softcover one. The first price I found surfing the web here in Italy is €9.00, and reaches €19.90. For the Italian translation, you can also find a book containing the 3 volumes that make up the trilogy (paperback format) for €16.90. For individual books, there is a version in e-book format, although I don't know how many languages it's available in.

TURNING PAGES

The last chapter of the "Books of Beginning" cycle by Stephens. Emma, Michael and Kate lose track of each other more than once, but splitting up is a necessary evil, as was already understood in the previous episode. The stakes are too high, the Feral Magnus must be stopped at all costs. Between battles to the death and some twists, the end is destined to arrive, one way or another.

There is nothing to say about the writing, the same type as the previous two episodes. Quiet, correct, with some very informal parentheses that help, especially if you're dealing with a genre intended for kids. The scenes and settings are more adult than the start of the cycle, even if there are additions that bring the fantasy back to a less complex level, perhaps even more so than in the second episode of the saga. However, neither of these two sides hindered me in reading and I liked the book: less "serious" than fantasy books with elves, dragons, orcs and anything else similar, but precisely for this reason with that boost of originality more than the usual plots addressed in this category. This is why I read the cycle, and it's what ultimately made me appreciate it; a fact that isn't obvious, for those like me who struggle to feel involved in the classic stories of elves, orcs and dragons immersed in a thousand battles. In short, I recommend the book as a fantasy reading for children and teenagers, or for adults who want to return to a look at simpler styles but with quite engaging plots.

PERSONAL RATING

For my personal rating of the book, I usually use two votes: a GENERAL VOTE, based on a more objective approach to the text (where I consider for example the author's way of writing, the plot, any errors found, etc), and an INVOLVEMENT VOTE, based instead on the effect that reading had on me (if it attracted me, if it intrigued and tempted me, if it gave me useful information, etc.). Each of the two ratings is marked with a number of stars, from one to 5.

In the case of L'Atlante di Tenebra, my personal response is:

GENERAL Vote: 4/5
INVOLVEMENT Vote: 4/5
