Hello!

Today I publish a post about my #lobook initiative. Here, I share my experience about a book, beginning from the buying and finishing with my personal review. You can read more about lobook, consulting my first Lobook post here on Blurt.

AND NOW, LET'S GO!

This new episode takes a cue from the James Rollins's novel, published with the title The Demon Crown (dates back to 2017 for the native version). The Italian version I read is La corona del diavolo, with the first publication in Italy dates back to 2018 and curated by Paolo Falcone. In the image below, you can see a cover picture from which I removed a few parts, trying to avoid possible direct advertisings.

And below, some slices of the inner pages:

I bought the book several months ago, in the paperback format. There are multiple editions with different prices, major for the hard-cover version and minor for the softcover one. The first price I found surfing the web here in Italy is €9,90, and reaches €18,60 for the hard cover version. You can find different price on your homeplace or online, someone with various offers. Maybe there is even an ebook format in Italian or English. I don't know for other languages.

TURNING PAGES

An old mystery, buried in the past, and whose shadow casts itself to the present day. A reminder of that mystery, many years later. And finally today, on a group of Hawaiian islands where a cloud of pestiferous little animals unleashes all its destructive force. What links these facts to the new epidemic that is emerging?

Usual book pattern for James Rollins. Anyone who has read any of the novels I have written knows what I'm talking about. A pinch of "many years ago", a pinch of "a few years later", a pinch of "today": these are the key points from where he gets the ingredients for his stories; flashbacks and scenarios on different fields that are slowly brought together in the hands of a single criminal machine. Certainly, not boring stories, based on action and Indiana Jones-style research attempts a lot. For those who like it, these stories are daily bread. They maintain good suspense, many events make the plot evolve. The side that I often find as a sore point is the narrative being a little too academic and lacking in those creative inflorescences that would help to give a bit of rhythm not to the plot but to the way of writing. A few more creative bits could help to maintain the attention of readers like me. It's not always easy to hold attention at a good level when the narrative is dry from that point of view. Ultimately, the novel is not bad, same opinion like all his previous titles. They are adventures that mix history, science and lots of action: if you like this type of plot, this novel certainly won't disappoint you.

PERSONAL RATING

For my personal rating of the book, I usually use two votes: a GENERAL VOTE, based on a more objective approach to the text (where I consider for example the author's way of writing, the plot, any errors found, etc), and an INVOLVEMENT VOTE, based instead on the effect that reading had on me (if it attracted me, if it intrigued and tempted me, if it gave me useful information, etc.). Each of the two ratings is marked with a number of stars, from one to 5.

In the case of La corona del diavolo, my personal response is:

GENERAL Vote: 3/5
INVOLVEMENT Vote: 3/5
