Hello!

Today I publish a post about my #lobook initiative. Here, I share my experience about a book, beginning from the buying and finishing with my personal review. You can read more about lobook, consulting my first Lobook post here on Blurt.

AND NOW, LET'S GO!

This new episode takes a cue from the Jørgen Brekke's novel, published with the title Nådens omkrets (dated back to 2011 for the native version). The Italian version I read is La biblioteca dell'anatomista, dated back to 2012 and curated by Alessandro Storti. In the image below, you can see a cover picture from which I removed a few parts, trying to avoid possible direct advertisings.

And below, some slices of the inner pages:

I bought the book several months ago, in the paperback format. There are multiple editions with different prices, major for the hard-cover version and minor for the softcover one. The first price I found surfing the web here in Italy is €9,00, and reaches €19,00 for the hard-cover edition. You can find different price on your home place or online, someone with various offers. Maybe there is even an e-book format in Italian or English.

TURNING PAGES

A trail of blood that seems to unravel from a manuscript written a few centuries earlier and arrived in the present day. In the frozen climate of Norway, the meeting point destined to reveal the mystery of these deaths, people killed with a motive still indecipherable.

This novel has the characteristic of offering some flashbacks in the style of mystery-adventure novels, but, otherwise, it seems like a classic detective story. There are many leads, many hypotheses. I'm not a fan of this kind of reading: old-fashioned detective stories, those with lots of assumptions that get lost along the way. This side often leads me to be absent and miss some clips. However, I liked some scenes in which the protagonists' personalities emerged, their lives, and the everyday life that surrounded them. Compared to how I like them, I found it too dispersive. It must be said that the closer you get to the classic mystery, the more it becomes a genre to avoid for me: it's a personal taste, it takes nothing away from the author.
I didn't perceive the plot as strong as I would have expected from my first impact with the book, but perhaps it's also due to 1) the way it is written and 2) my approach to this genre. However, I think the novel isn't too bad.

The writing style is quite academic, I didn't find a book full of cutting phrases that would have helped sometimes. The characters created intrigued me at first, but, throughout the novel, I would have liked to see them more at work and better inserted into the events; instead, I found this type of subsequent characterization almost completely absent. I perceived them as dummies placed inside a story, deprived of the ability to unravel all those tiny secondary plots that in my opinion would have helped the story. Trying to schematize the idea to make it better understood, I see in this novel the basic plot and the hint of subplots based on the characters, which however have never been developed. In my opinion, carrying them forward throughout the text would have provided an extra boost to the whole novel.

As for me, I can't be enthusiastic, but I can't be too harsh either. It's a book that in my opinion could have been better constructed, but, for a reading like any other one, it may be acceptable. I frame it on a bland sufficiency.

Pages: 352

Genre: Thriller, crime, mistery (a little)

PERSONAL RATING

For my personal rating of the book, I usually use two votes: a GENERAL VOTE, based on a more objective approach to the text (where I consider for example the author's way of writing, the plot, any errors found, etc), and an INVOLVEMENT VOTE, based instead on the effect that reading had on me (if it attracted me, if it intrigued and tempted me, if it gave me useful information, etc.). Each of the two ratings is marked with a number of stars, from one to 5.

In the case of La biblioteca dell'anatomista, my personal response is:

GENERAL Vote: 3/5
INVOLVEMENT Vote: 3/5
