Hello!

Today I publish a post about my #lobook initiative. Here, I share my experience about a book, beginning from the buying and finishing with my personal review. You can read more about lobook, consulting my first Lobook post here on Blurt.

AND NOW, LET'S GO!

This new episode takes a cue from the Herbie Brennan's novel, published with the title Faerie Wars (dated back to 2003 for the native version). The Italian version I read is La Guerra degli Elfi, first publication in Italy dates back to 2003 and curated by Angela Ragusa. In the image below, you can see a cover picture from which I removed a few parts, trying to avoid possible direct advertisings.

And below, some slices of the inner pages:

I purchased this book several years ago in a local bookstore and decided to reread the entire series it is part of in the last few months. Surfing the web, I found multiple editions with different prices, major for the hard-cover version and minor for the softcover one. The first price I found here in Italy is €11.00, and reaches €14.80 for the most expensive version. You can find different price on your homeplace or online, someone with various offers. Maybe there is even an ebook format in Italian or English. I don't know for other languages.

TURNING PAGES

Henry, Pyrgus, Mr. Fogarty, a gang of henchmen and a tangle of parallel worlds, mythological figures, sovereigns, demons and many never-ending feuds. Portals that refer between worlds, disagreements that fuel the hatred of universes where distinct factions are just waiting for the most banal pretext to unleash hell. Alongside this, a real world where science borders on the imaginary, becoming the only useful means to reach it.

A mixture that at first glance seems quite habitual for the genre, but which actually leads to an interesting development: full of references to the real world, mixed with very serious fantasy settings contrasted with others that are very jarring; jarring, yes, but only at first. For those who are tempted by the plot, these discrepancies become the cornerstone of the original features of this novel; the extra gear that allows this to be differentiated from a thousand other fantasy with a monotonous appearance, with many battles and intrigues, but always based on the same mold.

The writing style is acceptable, I think. I can't call it brilliant, but it falls within what I think is the average. In these cases, it's the plot that must draw the reader's attention, and the book manages to do this admirably. Ultimately, I liked the book.

PERSONAL RATING

For my personal rating of the book, I usually use two votes: a GENERAL VOTE, based on a more objective approach to the text (where I consider for example the author's way of writing, the plot, any errors found, etc), and an INVOLVEMENT VOTE, based instead on the effect that reading had on me (if it attracted me, if it intrigued and tempted me, if it gave me useful information, etc.). Each of the two ratings is marked with a number of stars, from one to 5.

In the case of La Guerra degli Elfi, my personal response is:

GENERAL Vote: 3/5
INVOLVEMENT Vote: 4/5
