I'll never forget that moment when I was sitting in my car outside a job interview and realized that I had lost all of the notes from my previous interview.
I knew that I was going to have to wing it, but at that moment I felt so terrified I wanted to cry.
Thankfully, I got the job.
What about you? Do you have similar experience where you found yourself unprepared, uncertain, and feeling hopeless?
While there's nothing wrong with feeling a little nervous before an important interview, it's vital to overcome your fears and feel confident.
This video offers 4 tips to help you deal with that next interview.
- Prep your game plan in advance
Don't just go in blind. Take some time to think through how you want your presentation to go.
When you go in to a meeting, you can't just turn on the charm and hope to win. You need to prepare your arguments and be sure you've prepared the right kind of answers to the right kinds of questions.
- Focus on what you're learning
In a lot of cases, our jobs give us the opportunity to learn a whole new set of skills.
While we could use that time to learn something that's directly applicable to our job, most of us will choose to learn something about ourselves instead.
This is a big mistake.
If you can take the time to learn how to do things you didn't know you were capable of, you can have much greater confidence and become a much more effective leader.
- Don't focus on the competition
One of the easiest ways to get discouraged is to compare your situation to the successes of your peers.
They may be happier, more successful and/or more confident, but you're not doomed to fail because they did it.
Instead of comparing yourself, try to find something positive that you can build off of.
There's always room to grow and learn something new. There's always something to improve on and ways you can be even better.
- Stay positive
It's okay to be scared or nervous about an upcoming event.
But the biggest thing that you can do to keep your attitude from sinking is to focus on the positive.
We can all become very negative when we're faced with new challenges and unknowns.
However, you can keep yourself going by focusing on the positive things you already know.
For example, don't let the fact that you're nervous or anxious stop you from going ahead with the plan.
Think about the skills that you already have. What strengths can you draw on? What assets can you bring to the table?
You may find that they give you the courage you need.
If you can stay focused on the positive and take advantage of your strengths, you can build confidence and ultimately, feel more secure about the upcoming interview.
That's it!
