My balcony is insane it is too hot for anything to grow all summer but everything is suddenly thriving now my kale, so many tomatoes not sure if they will ever ripen, a whole lettuce head grown from an old one from marks and Spencer and sweet potatoes and beetroot going strong ! I will get a banana today to put next to my tomatoes as it can ripen them up in the house.
Wow! I begin to think that a lot of gardening has to do with figuring out what grows well in your ecosystem. I might have to give up on okra, which hasn't done well for five years in a row here.
You might be able to keep tomatoes ripening longer if you cover them with a light colored and thin sheet to keep the plants warmer, but not block all the sun. I have a friend who props a pane of glass in front of them. Anything that is just starting to turn color will ripen fully in a sunny window, no banana needed.
Your balcony garden is very impressive! Isn't growing your own the best food you've ever eaten? I really think my health is much improved because I grow some of my own food.
I really agree with this I think I have my own little micro environment but even within a garden I think if you just find the right spot for something it makes the difference
It is rly satisfying to have a few full size chard leaves not just pathetic tiny ones was so rewarding I kind of want to plant more stuff now I’ve seen it growing I had given up a bit before. I wonder if I could get some beet root from seed going still
Try it and find out. Put some sort of heat containment contraption on them and I'll bet you could at least get some nice greens
