I love knitting and crocheting, and I've even been known to crochet socks. There's something about creating a scarf or a pair of mittens that makes me feel connected to the past, or at least to the person who made them.
In my case, I find that knitting can also bring me some peace and quiet. I know that I won't be interrupted during my projects, and I can listen to music, watch movies, or read an interesting article all while crafting without feeling guilty for staying focused.
When I began crafting on a regular basis, I never really thought much about why I chose a specific technique or how I picked my colors. My current craft practice is a mixture of all kinds of different crafting techniques, and I'll tell you all about that in this post.
In Part 1, I want to show you how knitting and crocheting techniques work together. I'll show you some of the basics of each technique and discuss how to choose between them. In Part 2, I want to show you how to take the basics of each craft and create something beautiful. This will be a combination of my own designs as well as patterns from various sources online.
Part 1: What's the Difference Between Knitting, Crocheting and Beads?
While the terms knitting and crocheting refer to the same thing, they both use different tools to create objects. In knitting, yarn is knitted directly off the needles, while in crocheting, thread is used to stitch an object together. The other term I'll mention is beads, which are used to decorate a project.
In this video, we'll start with knitting, but you can learn about crocheting later on. The first video is going to cover the basics of creating a scarf.
What Makes A Scarf?
There are several reasons why I chose to make a scarf. To begin with, they are the most flexible of all the projects we can do in our craft. This means that you can make a scarf to last longer or one that looks pretty quickly. It's also fairly easy to find patterns online, and the process of making a scarf is relatively quick.
A scarf can be made in almost any color combination and can range from a few inches long to a couple of yards long. You can choose a light or dark color theme, or you can create a neutral one that's easy to dress up or down.
When looking for a pattern, try to find one that offers detailed instructions so that you don't need to search the internet to figure out what you need to do next. Another great benefit of the scarf is that you can wear it all day long if you'd like, making it very convenient.
Basic Techniques
To knit, you'll need a set of double-pointed needles, a ball of yarn, and a needle to string a yarn tail. You'll also need to use a stitch marker for every round.
