Forest fires
Until recently, a few people have been unnerved by dark days. The 1950 Dark Day caused by forest fires in Alberta prompted confusion and alarm. According to Environment Canada senior climatologist David Phillips, the fear was magnified by geography. At the time, European settlements only reached about 200 miles inland. This meant that European settlers were living on the edge of a continent they knew little about.
Fog from a forest fire
No one knows why a forest fire can produce a darkness that lasts a minute or more, but many people suspect that it's caused by fog, soot, or both. Fog is a common occurrence on the eastern seaboard, and it is possible that fog and soot from a forest fire can cause a stifling darkness. Several eyewitness accounts support this theory. One man, Jeremy Belknap, described smelling a coal kiln and malt house. William Corliss collected 46 such accounts.
Firefighting crews in the United States traditionally work at night to create fuel breaks, strips of land that are stripped of flammable vegetation. But fires have become more intense and difficult to contain. The 319,000-acre North Complex fire in northeastern California is still burning despite the fact that it started close to midnight. A few hours later, trees in the area began to burst into flames.
1780's Dark Day
On May 19, 1780, New England experienced an unusually dark day. Observations revealed the darkened daytime sky was caused by a mixture of fog, cloud cover, and smoke from forest fires. This phenomenon, dubbed 1780's Dark Day, is still debated, but it is believed to have occurred over the New England states, Canada, and the Atlantic Ocean.
Although the Shakers were British, their actions drew the attention of authorities. They were regarded as suspicious by the American colonists, and they eventually ran afoul of the Committee for Detecting and Defeating Conspiracies, which had the power to arrest the Shakers.
People staying out after midnight
Many people believe that nothing good can happen after midnight, but that is not always the case. For starters, hanging out with friends is a good thing. Even if nothing happens, you should hug your friends and continue to celebrate the good times you've had. Furthermore, staying out after midnight is good for the bartenders, who keep the night going.
In addition, studies have shown that people are more prone to commit violent crimes, drugs, and suicide at night. Furthermore, people are also more likely to eat unhealthy foods after dark, such as processed foods high in fats and carbohydrates. Although there may be some biological explanation for these negative effects, researchers are not entirely sure.
Hello darkness my old friend.
