How to Build and Maintain Strong Relationships

in life •  2 years ago

Relationships are all about balance - there is a strong element of give and take in any relationship.

Without question, the most important element to building strong relationships is developing trust. And the way you build trust is by giving. But once you establish trust, you need to be prepared to receive.

There is an old saying that "it takes two to tango", and in a romantic relationship that is true. In business, too - it takes two to build a partnership. Without both giving and receiving, a partnership will fail.

Here are the three elements to building healthy business relationships.

STEP 1: Be the Person You Want Others To Be

Whether in a personal or professional relationship, people tend to be more interested in those that are similar to them.

If you want others to trust you, then become the person you wish to be trusted with. Be open, honest, and generous with your relationships. Don't be cheap or rude, and don't expect others to be that way, either.

STEP 2: Offer to Give Rather than Ask for a Favor

Asking someone to do something for you isn't as powerful as offering to do something. If you want someone to help you, give them something that will help them in return.

That doesn't mean asking them to go into debt, but it does mean offering them something that will make them happy or useful to you.

Even if they say no, it still builds your relationship because you put them in a position where they can't say no. They'll always have that option, and they'll always feel appreciated for doing something for you.

STEP 3: Return Favor by Giving Them Something Back

Just as you should be willing to give, you also need to be willing to take.

Return favors to others when you've received something from them. If you've offered to help them with their social media, you should always be ready to answer when they have a question. This goes for networking opportunities, too.

If someone has helped you out, it's only fair that you return that favor. Make sure you're always ready to return favors whenever you can.
