Is Your Comfort Zone Holding You in a Torture Chamber?

When we think of torture, we often think of physical or psychological acts that cause a person to suffer. While this is certainly true, there are other factors that are also involved, such as coercive environmental factors, or other forms of coercion. When these factors are systematically arranged, they can be considered torture under the legal definition.

Stepping out of your comfort zone
If you are in a comfort zone, it can be difficult to move beyond it. You may be scared of trying something new or doing something you are unsure of. However, stepping out of your comfort zone can give you the courage to take risks and enrich your life.

Physical and psychological torture
Torture is an illegal act of inflicting severe pain on a person for an unlawful purpose. The Convention against Torture is an international treaty that came into force on 26 June 1987. As of May 2015, there are 158 signatory states.

Sensory assaults
The sensory assault can hold you in a torture chamber, even if you are not subjected to physical harm. In fact, such assaults can produce symptoms that are similar to those of various mental disorders, including schizophrenia. The resulting thinking patterns of victims of sensory overload are similar to those of people with these disorders.

Positional torture
Positional torture involves holding you in a position against your will. It can be physical or psychological. The torturer holds the captive in a position where his or her body is forced against the ceiling or walls.
