Developing a Self-Care Routine: Prioritizing Your Well-Being for a Happier Life

What does well-being mean to you? For some, it might mean going out and eating sushi with friends. Others might say it's spending time with their kids, and still others might value being more present during tough times.

Whatever you choose, you'll want to make sure that you're prioritizing it as an important part of your life. Here are a few tips for achieving that.

Start by getting honest about how much time you have

There's a chance that you're going to think that you're too busy. While it's true that you can always find time for yourself, you'll likely be surprised to discover just how much time you really have. For starters, try using a calendar to see exactly how much time you have in every day of the week.

Then, start scheduling your time so that you can get the most benefit from it. You should aim to schedule activities that align with your priorities. Consider doing your relaxation exercises during your break or while you're driving.

Prioritize quality over quantity

This point ties back to scheduling your time. It doesn't matter if you get in 60 minutes of exercise during the day if you only work out for 30.

In fact, it's even better if you do something that's beneficial to you that only takes 30 minutes because that's probably going to last longer than any workout session you do.

Consider setting aside specific times for socializing with friends and family

While it's important to take time to relax and unwind with friends and family, don't forget to make time for yourself as well.

Don't feel pressured to spend all your time with friends and family. Instead, give yourself permission to prioritize them. In fact, it may be useful to consider doing a weekly check in with your friends and family to get their input on what you should prioritize.

When you begin to carve out time for yourself, you'll discover just how much more energy you have. If you think this is impossible, I encourage you to try this out and see how your well-being improves.

Give yourself permission to say no

It sounds simple, but it's hard to be effective when you feel like you can't turn away work. That's especially true when it comes to tasks that aren't directly aligned with your priorities.

Think about giving yourself permission to say no when you feel overwhelmed. It's completely okay to decline the opportunity and tell your co-workers that you need to focus on yourself. Your well-being is far too important to let slip away.
