The Psychology of Motivation: Understanding What Drives Us

in life •  2 years ago

If you want something bad enough, you will find a way to make it happen. This principle is based on a phenomenon known as "motivation". But why are we motivated? How does motivation work? Why is motivation good? What are some ways we can motivate ourselves?

STEP 1: Understand What Motivation Is

The first step towards understanding motivation is to understand what it is. In psychology, motivation is often described as the reason an individual does something. For example, motivation may be the reason an individual works for a company or pays his/her bills on time. It can also be used to describe how a person feels about performing a certain task.

It's important to note that motivation is not a trait; instead it is a process. A person may have motivation when he/she wants to accomplish a specific goal, but once the goal is accomplished, the motivation may dissipate.

A person who has low motivation may perform tasks for very little reward or in order to meet a deadline rather than enjoy the process. A person with high motivation will likely perform tasks for the fun and enjoyment.

Motivation is the key factor in determining whether an individual will succeed or fail. It determines whether someone will finish their goals. It's the main reason why we do anything at all.

STEP 2: Figure Out What Motivates You

If you want to motivate yourself to do something, the first thing you need to figure out is why you're motivated to do it. As you think about this question, look at what motivates you in life. Why do you go to school? Why do you work? Why do you do things you don't enjoy?

To be more motivated, try thinking about what motivates you. When I get home from work, I know I'll feel more refreshed and motivated if I read or write instead of watching TV or relaxing.

The following diagram will help you determine what motivates you:

As you can see, there are three areas of motivation that can impact your success and performance. These are internal, external and social.

Internal Motivation

Internal motivation is the result of an individual deciding to do something. Internal motivation often refers to self-interest. If you're motivated by personal goals, you are internally motivated.

Examples of Internal Motivation

Being motivated by money

Performing on a higher level

Performing in front of others

Performing at work

Social Motivation

Social motivation comes from interacting with others. When you interact with others, they become part of your motivation. You may want to complete a task so that you can please your parents, spouse or friends.

Social motivation often happens when someone tries to help you achieve your goals. Social motivation is based on giving a person what he/she wants.

Example of Social Motivation

Trying to get people to like you

Trying to help others

Giving people rewards

Externally Motivated

External motivation comes from the environment. It's when the environment makes a task enjoyable.
