In this post, I'll be talking about how to stop procrastinating and start getting more done. This isn't just for writers, it applies to all types of creative professionals.
When I first started out, I would take a week off from writing every now and then because I didn't have any inspiration. This resulted in me making zero progress. It was all very frustrating.
Eventually I realized that I had to stop waiting for inspiration and that I needed to just write anyway.
So let's talk about why you should try this and what it takes.
STEP 1: Plan Out Your Day and Know What You Need to Do
It's easy to get stuck in the middle of the day, sitting at your computer, staring at the screen. Sometimes you feel like you can't motivate yourself to get started until you know exactly what you need to be working on. But if you know what you need to do, then you don't need to sit and wait for inspiration. You can just go out and get started.
I recommend starting your day with an activity that will help you prepare for the rest of your day. It doesn't have to be very long either. Something like this is ideal:
5 minute warm up exercise to get your blood flowing
15 minute power cleanse and stretch routine
5 minute workout
15 minute writing session
STEP 2: Start Doing Something
Even if you're only able to spend 10 minutes doing anything useful, do it. Don't over think things. If you don't do it, then you won't get any benefit.
So just jump in and start working on something. You don't have to be good at it. Just get it out of the way so you can start focusing on more important stuff.
STEP 3: Don't Worry About It Too Much
Don't worry if you only spend 10 minutes doing something. That's plenty of time. If you only spent 10 minutes trying to get good at programming, it probably wouldn't matter.
But that's not the point.
If you spend 10 minutes doing something, then that means you got something done. If you didn't get something done, you would have wasted 10 minutes. So if you spend 10 minutes doing something, then that's 10 minutes less you would have wasted if you were still procrastinating.
And that means that 10 minutes you spent doing something, you could have been doing something more productive instead. So if you want to start getting more done, just start. Don't worry about if you're going to get something done in the first 5 or 10 minutes.
STEP 4: Finish What You Start
Once you've finished your task for the day, you can move on to the next one. But before moving on, go back and finish what you started.
Why?
Because finishing it gives you more confidence. You've already completed what you needed to do. You
