First and foremost, outstanding leaders genuinely care about people. Your job is to help others succeed, not to make yourself successful or to appear good. A military commander, for example, ensures that his men are well-cared for so that they can succeed. He understands that when his troops succeed, he triumphs as well. The same may be said of all outstanding leaders.

Great leaders are surrounded by a fantastic team. They understand the importance of assembling a team of people who are gifted, skilled, and knowledgeable in ways that they are not. A leader recognizes that acquiring the wisdom of many people helps to the best overall solutions. As a result, a strong leader isn't scared to surround himself with people who are wiser than him.

Great leaders are humble and seek feedback from others. Because great leaders recognize that they are not the smartest person in the room, their ego is not injured when someone suggests a better solution than one they proposed. They do not dismiss the contributions of others as insignificant. This boosts team morale and earns the leader's respect. When others present a solution that they would not have considered previously, they listen with an open mind and without a large ego.

Great leaders inspire others and mobilize them to a common objective. They have a plan. They sketch out a strategy for reaching a goal but leave it up to their team to execute it. They maintain their optimism and feel that everything is possible. They challenge their employees to come up with unique ideas and solutions and reward them for their efforts.

Great leaders have honesty. They are trustworthy. People believe them because they say yes when they mean yes and no when they mean no. When a leader does not keep their promise, when they can't be trusted, others are hesitant to follow. Again, this is true at home, in friendships, and in the business.

How are you faring as a leader in your family, social group, or workplace?
