Today, I had planned to take a matatu to Mombasa. For those unfamiliar, a matatu is a small minibus that waits until it's full before departing for its destination. Unfortunately, the matatu I was in didn't fill up quickly. After waiting for over an hour, just as it was finally ready to take off, I received a message on my phone. The news wasn't good—Mombasa was experiencing significant unrest due to protests, and the city had essentially shut down.
With my plans thwarted, I quickly jumped out of the matatu. Instead, I headed to the supermarket, where I encountered some smaller protests. After picking up what I needed, I returned home and tuned into the news. The situation in Mombasa was indeed severe, and I felt relieved that I hadn't made the trip.
Adding to the stress, I have to leave Kenya in a few days, but I still haven't planned my route. It's going to be a hectic few days, and I can only hope everything falls into place.
For a better understanding of the situation in Kenya, I've linked videos from YouTube that others have shared.
Update
As I write this post, I've just received news that the tax bill has passed, a section of Parliament is burning, and riots have started here in town. I took two photos of the local unrest, which I've included in this article. I'll be posting my video later on 3Speak.
Stay tuned for more updates from the front line.
