August 26th, 2020: What is "Fair Value," Really?

in investing •  4 years ago

Whether you are dealing with the Cryptosphere or the greater world, "value" is a pretty strange thing.

Right now, we say that the Blurt token is "valued" at about US $0.01.

Somewhere else, we might say that the Steem token is "valued" at US $0.24.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, Bitcoin is "valued" at US $11,500.00 and change.

At the opposite end of that spectrum, Weku — an early Steem clone — is "valued" at pretty much zero.

Not related — and yet not entirely UNrelated — the "value" of the US stock market is approaching all time highs.

But what does this really mean?

When I buy potatoes, or electricity, or a plane ticket, or a car... value is associated with a tangible utility to the purchaser; the user. There's a tangible underlying asset we can place our worth on.

But what are we basing the "value" of — for example — a Blurt token on?

Is the the intangible "agreement" that our content has a utility value to users? Or is it pure speculation that operates independently of our actual efforts?

It all kinda makes my head spin, sometimes!

What do YOU think? Where does VALUE come from?
