My Kind of Humour.

in humor •  3 years ago

I read @gingerup's post and I would say that I agree with all he said. What he described is my kind of person and to avoid repetition, I would just share a story of what happened to me in 1998, to humour us and to open everyone to the kind of humour I could take especially the type that is borne out of my foolishness hahaha.

I travelled home for my paternal grandmother's funeral in 1998. I was young then and in the village, they are known for original natural drinks which is in sharp contrast to the ones in the city because most of those in the city have been diluted. I didn't know how strong the palm wine in the village can be. I've taken a few in the City and I felt nothing. So, around 9 pm, I went to my dad's table and poured myself a glass of palm wine from the 25 litres keg he kept side on their table. I finished that cup and I went for another which he gave me but with a warning to be careful. I laughed and told him it was just palm wine and not beer. He laughed and told me to be careful. The second cup I took was the last of it.

I started feeling sleepy and drowsy at the same time. My eyes were tinting and I wasn't standing so well. It's an overnight party and I didn't even know when it was...I found a bench outside the house since most people were outside and I slept. Vaguely, I remembered someone woke me up to go inside when the party was rounding up, say around 3 am - 4 am and as I stood up...I started heading towards the nearby bush. All I heard was a scream from the person that woke me up and turned back. On turning back again he saw me heading to the bush which was why he screamed. He dragged me back and guided me into one of the rooms.

I woke up around past 8 am, alone on the mat and in the room and I started smelling something funny... I touched my clothes and it was still a bit wet. I didn't think too much of it until I stood up, and asked people around where my cousins were and they described to me where the well was because they were fetching. As I was sighted from afar, they pointed at me and started laughing. That was how they narrated all my dramas to me and how I vomited all over my body in the room.

Where am I driving at? This is a joke at my expense based on a choice I made that wasn't wise and I don't mind that but jokes about people's disabilities and anything challenging them, I am not for such jokes. My kind of jokes has to be those you can think of in your head without much thought...those that don't attack you as a person but questions your choices, your decisions and your view of things.

I can never support any joke that brings down another human being because mental health is real. Someone said that you can be seated next to a broken person and you wouldn't know it. A lot of people might appear strong but they are frail. You have no idea what goes on in their heads and if you make them feel worse, you are sending them to a very dark place without knowing.

A lot of people have doubted themselves and are close to breaking point. At least if you can't help them, leave them as they are. We are to be more sensitive to the plights of others. Our humour or jokes must have a limit. There are some lines that must not be crossed...lines of attacking the human...making them feel worthless and alone.

I couldn't help but laugh when I read @mariela53's post. Jokes can't hurt those who already joked about their situations. What happened to her wasn't funny but when you look at it in hindsight, you can't help but laugh. You can read her post [here].

She spoke about how she wore tight shoes all day and thank God for the rain after she took the shoes off...because everyone would assume the rain made her take them off. This is my favourite part for me:

It was a long ride home. Once I got on the bus, I stopped feeling sorry for myself and took off my shoes, the skin of the blisters stuck to the shoe. I screamed but managed to get them off.
I could breathe calmly and then very heavy rain fell, what I did was to thank God because that rain fell and I could justify why I was walking barefoot in that area so walkable hahahahahahaha.
I arrived home completely wet and I told my cousin what had happened to me, my cousin had a fit of laughter and I laughed even more, hahahahahaha.

This was humour based on a choice she made...it's worth laughing about. This is the kind of jokes or humour I love.
