Calculating Annual Percentage Rate (APR) for DeFi LPs

in hpl •  last year

The Delta Method and the Multiplier Method are two different ways of calculating the Annual Percentage Rate (APR) for liquidity pools in decentralized finance (DeFi).

Delta Method

The Delta Method calculates the APR based on the change in the pool's total value over a period of time. The formula for the Delta Method is:

APR = ( ΔTV / TV0 ) * (365 / T)

where:
ΔTV is the change in the pool's total value over the period of time T
TV0 is the pool's total value at the beginning of the period of time T
T is the period of time in days

Multiplier Method

The Multiplier Method calculates the APR based on the pool's total fees collected over a period of time. The formula for the Multiplier Method is:

APR = ( Fees / TV0 ) * (365 / T)

where:
Fees is the total fees collected by the pool over the period of time T
TV0 is the pool's total value at the beginning of the period of time T
T is the period of time in days

Which Method is Better?

The Delta Method is more accurate than the Multiplier Method, but it is also more complex to calculate. The Multiplier Method is simpler to calculate, but it is less accurate.

In general, the Delta Method is the preferred method for calculating APRs, but the Multiplier Method may be a good option for users who are not comfortable with more complex calculations.

Here is a table that summarizes the key differences between the Delta Method and the Multiplier Method.

Additional Considerations

When comparing APRs from different pools, it is important to be aware of the following:

  • The fees charged by the pool
  • The liquidity of the pool
  • The volatility of the assets in the pool

These factors can all have a significant impact on the APR of a pool.
