Some investor and traders expect that blockchain game would next next big wave. The idea that blockchain games and game tokens might be the next significant investment opportunity is built on the premise that each decade has seen the rise of a new era in gaming, with associated investment opportunities.

  1. 1978-1983: The era of arcade games, which were seen as an inflation hedge.
  2. 1983: The beginning of the video game era.
  3. 1985-2013: The era of console games, marked by systems like Nintendo and Xbox.
  4. 2000s: Online games came into prominence, with titles like World of Warcraft (WoW) and MapleStory.
  5. 2010s: The rise of mobile gaming.

Now, looking at the 2020s, there's speculation that blockchain games could be the next frontier, especially with the push towards web3.0 technologies and high-profile tech figures like Elon Musk showing interest in this space through actions like the acquisition of platforms like Twitter.

Blockchain gaming, part of the larger trend of the gamification of finance and the rise of play-to-earn models, has indeed gained substantial momentum. It's intertwined with the growing interest in decentralized finance (DeFi) and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). These games often incorporate NFTs, allowing players to own unique digital items with the potential for real-world value.

From an investment perspective, there are several points to consider:

  • Early Adoption and Growth: Blockchain games are still in their infancy. Early adopters could potentially reap significant returns if these games become mainstream. However, early-stage investments carry higher risks, including volatility and regulatory uncertainty.

  • Tokenomics: Game tokens often have unique economic models (tokenomics) that can create scarcity and drive value. However, the value is highly dependent on the game's success and player adoption.

  • Technological Advancements: The development of web3.0 might enable more sophisticated and user-friendly blockchain games, potentially increasing their appeal to a broader audience.

  • Community and Network Effects: The success of games often relies on robust and active communities. Blockchain games that can create strong network effects may become more valuable over time.

  • Regulatory Environment: The regulatory landscape for cryptocurrencies and NFTs is still evolving. Changes in regulations could significantly impact the investment outlook for blockchain games.

  • Historical Performance: While past performance isn't indicative of future results, the growth pattern of digital and online gaming can provide insights. For example, the rapid adoption of mobile gaming created substantial opportunities for developers and investors.

Practical examples include the rise and fall of certain blockchain games and their associated tokens. Games like Axie Infinity saw explosive growth and a subsequent decline, highlighting both the potential and volatility of such investments.

While blockchain games and game tokens show promise as an emerging investment area, they also carry significant risks.
Thorough due diligence, a clear understanding of the underlying technology, and careful consideration of market trends are essential for anyone considering an investment in this space. As always with investments, especially in cutting-edge technology, it's crucial to invest only what one can afford to lose and to diversify one's portfolio to manage risk.

play to earn usually means play to waste your time and nothing else. That's the problem. These games should represent much more than mechanics based on making money. It should be somewhere far in the background as a reward for the best of the best, and the game itself should be simply addictive and immersive.
