Learning From Downvote Cases On Hive: Low Effort?

Everyone may know that the whales on Hive platform have been known to downvote their own platform users. There are many examples of downvotes leading to user dissatisfaction, frustration, and even anger.

For example, here are some of them:

Why did this happen? In particular, it raises the question of why whales on Hive often downvote the users of their own platform. Don't they need a lot of users to attract investors? If they downvote their users in such a way, won't they leave?

One of the reasons they thought they were justified in downvoting was "low effort", also known as "low quality". Therefore, if one day your posts are too short in content for example, be prepared to be downvoted, as this could be considered "low effort".

First, I agree that we need to downvote spam posts. In which the same content is automatically posted over and over again. Likewise, if the content is misleading (scam) or steals someone else's article (plagiarism), this also needs to be downvoted.

But what about the "low effort" reason? Currently, there are many whales on Hive who have downvoted for this reason. Of course, this causes frustration and even anger among the affected users. What is the problem with short content or uninteresting posts?

Who are we to decide which posts are good and which are bad? How do we determine which posts are high effort and which are low effort? After all, there are no rules limiting the size of an effort or quality.

Would a post containing a photo and a few accompanying words be considered "low effort"? But we don't put writer's effort for taking the photo. It might take a long time and a lot of effort that was not easy.

If we don't like a post, or if we think a post is low effort, low quality, or bad, it is sufficient just not to upvote it. We do not have to downvote it. Thus, at least we have helped to avoid spreading hatred on the platform.

Therefore, I do not agree that "low effort" is a valid reason to downvote. And we shouldn't downvote for this reason, especially when we are whales with great power. Because with great power comes great responsibility.

But luckily, here on Blurt we already got rid of the downvote feature. I think this is the most brilliant move on Blurt platform. 👍🙂

Yeah … 99% of the Downvotes on Hive are just for kicks. The Hive Whales love making fun of people who complain about losing a few pennies……. It’s a big inside joke over there.

Weird behavior .. It will eventually drive people away from their own platform..
