Overhead images captured by satellite show the devastation on Tonga caused by Saturday’s underwater volcano eruption, the largest anywhere in 30 years. The pictures show giant plumes of smoke, as well as entire neighborhoods covered in black volcanic ash.
The full scale of the damage isn’t yet known, as communications between Tonga and the rest of the world remain mostly cut off by the eruption, and it may be weeks before they’re restored. New Zealand is currently trying to send clean water and other supplies, but the plane is unable to land due to ash blanketing the main airport’s runway.
